Colors World Cup Day 9: Criss Cross Crew

Today's World Cup event is brought to you by Tobi-han, Colors' own great world traveller. Last year, he uncovered a musical cipher—this year, he's brought one from his friends in another country! He likes to call it Criss Cross Crew after those friends and their favourite sport.

Peculiar shape, isn't it? The rules for filling it in are simple, though! Each word must be related to sport somehow and you may only use any unique word once. You must justify your answers! For example, if you fill in #1 with "bats", you might state "Bats are used to strike the ball in baseball" or any other explanation clarifying the word's connection to sport. This explanation is mandatory.
This is an open game, which means other players' answers will be visible, but please make sure your entry does not copy other players, or you will be asked to submit a new cipher. Tobi-han values variety, so no matter what, you can only use two words already used by other players.
Use the following form to submit your completed cipher.
The form above features a bonus area; you can win a crayon for providing any of the following: The name of the series feature in the banner, the sport featured in said series, or the country said sport is native to. It's also one of the official sports of this country!
Enjoy the second-last event in the Colors World Cup, which will remain open until noon GMT on August 18!
