Advent Calendar Day 13

DAY 13: Triskaidekaphobia!

That is -- the irrational fear of the number 13! Do you jump the 13th step? Or maybe avoid flying on Friday the 13th? If you don't have any 13 related superstitions feel free to share any others. Broken mirrors, ladders, black cats, not washing your socks on game day, etc!

For answering this you can immediately take one choice card numbered 13 and you'll get one random special! This post will be open until December 31st like the rest of the advent posts!

I ammmmmm only mildly superstitious, really. The only thing I'm paranoid about is 'jinxing' things per se. I always have to RELIGIOUSLY knock on wood if I think I've jinxed something, haha.

(there are a million other things I'd like to say about how the superstition of black cats is harmful to the little fuzzballs but I'mma shut my mouth before I start sounding like someone from PETA lmfao)

I'mma nab ordinary13!

I don't think I have any superstitions? At least, none that are particularly coming to mind right now... I am the kind of person who has to sleep with my closet door closed because I'm scared something's gonna pop out at me in the middle of the night, haha. Does that count?

Taking Expelled13, thanks!

I'm not really superstitious. I even lived on the 13th floor in college. The only time that worked out poorly for me was the time the power went out shortly before afternoon classes, and I'd left a notebook up in my dorm room while eating lunch on the ground floor.

I'm taking serpent13 as my choice card.

Haha, I'm actually like... Super superstitious about Friday the 13th, but largely because I was in a serious accident on Friday the 13th! So ever since, I've been kind of nervous about the day, especially with driving, since it was a car accident! But it tends to be alright, luckily, I'm just dumb.

I'll be taking jumbo13!

13 is a beautiful number. Because of the stigma it carries, I'm more likely to pick the number 13 than avoid it. It even used to be in some of my passwords, but I picked up a few different favorite numbers. To me, 13 is a good sign!

I'll take Tinto13.

I'm not really that superstitious, even if sometimes I do get a bit paranoid when something I say actually happens or when something bad actually happens on Friday the 13th. A few times I've predicted what I get from game prizes and it has happened (haha, I wish it wouldn't be the ones I joke about and actually would be ones I collect) and on one 13th my computer got broken...

Though I do keep watching my step if a Friday 13th happens during winter... though I keep watching my step during winter anyway.

Taking salmon13 as my choice card.

I can't think of one off the top of my head but I will (probably) knock on wood if I say 'knock on wood' for good luck?

I'll take kitsune13 for some extra luck~

I think a lot of superstitions are good to follow, but not because I'm worried about things like bad luck or curses. There are some things like black cats that are just ridiculous and are actively damaging animals for no reason than baseless paranoia (black cats are killed because of this, beginner's luck is just a way of protecting one's own ego, friday the 13th is just another day,) but many of them make good cautionary tales.

Glass is especially dangerous when broken, ladders can be knocked over while you're walking under them (this is especially dangerous if it's a cheap one and someone's on it,) keeping an umbrella open inside is a good way to jab somebody with the sharp end of it, things like that are safer to avoid to begin with.

As for the rest--most of them I don't have strong feelings about one way or another. Picking up a penny, even, if it doesn't bring luck all day long, might brighten someone's day, keeping a charm might make them feel better. Things like that are nice for those who can put faith into them, I think, and harmless to anyone who doesn't. Even if I don't believe in them, I really enjoyed them as a kid. I still think they're cute and nice for people who do.

Taking kamisarizuki13 as my choice card.

I don't have any superstition about the number 13, and I don't believe things like if you have broke a mirror you'll get X years of bad luck.

Taking enthusiastic 13 and waiting for my random card <3.

I'm actually not afraid of Friday the 13th/the number 13 because I was born on Friday the 13th. :'D I'm not really superstitious at all, really.

grabbing supporter13!
laurant: (Meruru- ehhh)

[personal profile] laurant 2013-12-14 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I... don't have any superstitions, really! Friday the 13th is like any other day to me, and if breaking a mirror was bad luck I'm sure I'd be seeing the consequences of that, since I work in the furniture area at work! No superstitions of black cats either or anything like that.

Taking anti13 as my choice card!
secretambition: (Disney ★ Merida)

[personal profile] secretambition 2013-12-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have anything. I think Friday the 13th is just an ordinary day and nothing bad happens to me on these days. It's always good to keep common sense in one's head, about broken mirrors/glass being dangerous for anyone for obvious reasons etc. I don't believe in bad luck (even when I had to go to the ER on Wednesday, and I could swear I had a nightmare about ER situations earlier this week -- or when T keeps getting 0048 cards that I already have. Five in a row, man.) or anything. Things just happen while we live here.

Taking descendant13, and now I have the 13th card of all four Ayashi No Ceres decks, haha.

I'm not particularly superstitious, though that's probably because I don't know/remember enough superstitions to be. |D One superstition I remember following to some degree for fun when I was younger, though, was that sitting cross-legged while playing cards is bad luck. Or something to that effect.

Taking uptight13!
preternatural: (kirigiri)

[personal profile] preternatural 2013-12-14 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely try to avoid flying on Friday the 13th - I'm not hugely superstitious, but it's one of those things where I go 'oh. well. LET'S DO THE 12TH OR THE 14TH INSTEAD.'

The one thing I am superstitious about is walking under ladders, though - I'll cross the street if I have to just to keep from walking under a ladder! Same for walking across grates in the sidewalk - I just can't do it. I know they're supposed to be strong but I'm always like 'WHAT IF I FALL IN HERE'. It's so dumb but I'm definitely weird about it!

I'll be taking sonati13!
totling: (Default)

[personal profile] totling 2013-12-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nnnnope, not really. I do avoid ladders and walking underneath them, but that's more because it's a safety hazard and I'm terrified of heights. I can't think of anything actively superstitious either... I'm boring, maybe?

Gonna grab alexandria13!

I never saw the 13th as a bad number? Im not sure why its considered as such? Is it because of movie 'friday the 13th'? >< Sorry! I don't know what to really say for this! Some people I know don't like number 4, but it doesn't bother me at all really ^^

Took shining13!
awestriker: (dibstuck)

I don't really have any superstitions of any sort, honestly! Not beyond silly video game tricks like that down+B thing in Pokemon.

Taking thinking13~

i'm not really superstious myself. friday the 13th always felt like an another day to me as did the number 13 which also was just a number in my mind. i guess it's bc as far as i can recall nothing better or worse than any other day ever happened to me. i do find the who stigma surrounding black cats sad though bc i always found them to be really beautiful creatures :(

taking crescent13, which incidentally features a certain black kitty ehe
stag: (Default)

tbh the only superstitious habits i have are luck-related pregame rituals for sports haha. throughout middle/high school i always wore the #10 jersey (because my birthday is 10/10). i'd always step out onto the (volleyball, tennis) court right foot first. before every single swim meet, our team got in a huddle & would scream our cheer as loud as we could. like rin, i'd snap my goggles before each race.

if i'm watching an important match (clasico/champions league/world cup) i'll wear my team jersey and watch the match from a specific room in the house. i will literally change clothes and situate things before matches start for maximum luck.

too bad i already mastered horoscope because a midorima card would've been hilariously perfect. grabbing samezuka13!

I don't fear anything associated with number 13, thankfully, and I don't believe in any superstitions. Although I'm one of those people who thinks black cats bring good luck instead of bad, they earned such an unnecessary bad rep.

I'll take marksman13!

My family's pretty superstitious! My mother doesn't like it when I put white in my hair, because white's associated with death. Same with overly white make-up. We line up our shoes along the wall perpendicularly because otherwise we'd bring in bad luck, and we knock on wood when discussing negative topics. I'm not too superstitious myself, but habits are habits and tradition is tradition. I've always thought that superstitions were something that people use to make sense of the chaotic nature of the world, and that it's something that slowly accumulates over time. There ought to be small things that you believe in as you mature, if only because you've experienced so much that the only way to make sense of it all is to attribute it to causation, rather than correlation or coincidence.

... but rofl I'm rambling. TL;DR I think the older I get, the more likely I am to attribute events to causation rather than coincidences. :'D But as of right now I'm not too superstitious...!!

I'll be taking cheshire13!

Nope, I am not superstitious in the slightest. My mom's family is to a truly startling degree, though, and I've always found it faintly ridiculous. That probably has something to do with my scorn for superstitions in general, haha.

I'm actually not very superstitious, in all honesty. Sometimes it's a fun gimmick with friends, but I don't think Friday the thirteenth is doomsday or breaking a mirror will have anything to do with my luck. It's fun to tease people about, but in general I'm not too bothered. I guess if I'm superstitious the closest thing is ghosts |b

Taking foreigner13~!

I'm not really superstitious, to be honest! My irrational fears are more about myself forgetting things, i.e. I double and triple check my work hours over and over, but black cats and the number 13 are just a big fat EH W/E from me.

Taking ambition13!

not really superstitious, but in chinese certain numbers and words sound like others. like 4 sounds like death, 8 sounds like richness....so avoid 4 at all costs and yay for 8 \o/ also you can't give anyone clocks as presents because that sounds like you want them to die u___u

i'm convinced wearing certain socks gives me luck though. lu han socks gives you a guaranteed 5% increase in test scores trust me i'm a scientist!!!!!

taking late13 ;;
