Colors Chat 112

Finally, school's out for the day. Time to go to your part-time job, get your homework done, or dungeon crawl through the physical manifestation of someone's unconscious psyche. Oh, but wait, the group chat's blowing up! Better see what everyone wants...

Welcome to Colors Chat, where you can chat with your fellow Colors TCG members! For your response to the topic, you'll receive a card rainbow! As a general rule, responses should be around 5 sentences, but if you're a little short that's fine as long as your response is thoughtful. You don't have to answer all the prompts (or any of the prompts at all) as long as your response is on the topic.

This round's topic is.... DUBS vs SUBS!
Pretty simple this round! Do you prefer dubs or subs? Do you swap between the two depending on the situation, or stick with one way all the time? Dubs get a bad rap, but are there any dubs out there you actually enjoy? Do you prefer dubs in a language that's not English? Would a favorite voice actor make you more willing to watch a specific dub or sub?

After you've responded, reply to other players' answers and start up a discussion! You can earn 2 extra random cards by replying to other people, up to 6 bonus cards total. Feel free to have more discussions than that, but you'll only get rewards for your first three conversations. See the first comment on this post for how to obtain your bonus rewards.

Please keep all comments civil and polite. This round ends Sunday, June 5th is closed.

the baccano dub is so fun! i always rec it dubbed, too. they really went all out with the different accents and stuff, so it's one of those i actually prefer dubbed because it just adds to it in such a neat way.

i normally go with sub! i usually put subtitles on what i'm watching regardless of language, and i like to hear the original language of media. i'm definitely not opposed to dub though, and i don't mind watching the dub if whoever i'm watching with prefers them. i also tend to play most video games dubbed, so that i can understand every line while i'm playing without having to split my attention between the gameplay and reading the subtitles. i've been thinking of switching genshin to chinese though so i can hear more of those phonetics and hear how certain characters' names are supposed to be pronounced.

i have been watching clips or whole episodes of some media lately though, so that i can hear how the dub actors interpret the characters, or how they localize certain lines/honorifics/etc. most of the newer stuff is pretty solid! i haven't really listened to enough dub to have voice actors i will go out of my way to watch (though i really like how aleks le and billy kametz play every character i've heard them do), but i do have a Certain voice actor i do not like because he's uhhh not a great person, so i'm less likely to watch something dubbed if he's in it.

ngl i have a hard time staying focused on watching stuff so i don't actually watch much anime (will normally just read the manga), and when i do i'll usually go for the dub if it's available so i can still follow what's going on when i inevitably look away from the screen... only exception is jjba i think. i'll typically play video games subbed though since i read really fast and have less trouble staying engaged with those.

i don't really have strong opinions about specific subs/dubs honestly. i'm very fond of the death note dub because i watched it 10 trillion times as a kid but i don't know if i'd say it's "good" lmao. i also prefer shin and noi drhdr's jp VAs over the english ones but they aren't bad (and tbh some of it could just be because of some specific translation choices i don't like). the only english VA i know by name is aleks le who is endeared to me because of how much he seems to like kaiman lmao.

i haven't watched dorohedoro yet (it's coming up really soon on my to watch list though), but i have watched clips of kaiman in both english and japanese to hear how he sounds. i had to hear how he sounded when i found out his japanese seiyuu was wataru takagi (his okuyasu voice is one of my favorites tbh), and i was so impressed with how well aleks le got his vibe down. especially because the one place i knew aleks's voice before was zenitsu from demon slayer who is... definitely a different vibe. his range is impressive, and the art and game streams he does are funny too.

I have really bad auditory processing, so I generally have subtitles on for... everything, even for videos in English. (Please put closed captions on your English youtube videos if you are a content creator, people like me will be eternally grateful.) With that in mind, I definitely default to subs. I might check out a dub if I've heard it's particularly good (Baccano is up there) or if it's a gag dub (I watched Ghost Stories).

The Bungou to Alchemist dub seemed pretty good from what I heard of it, though! Checked that one out just because it's my favorite series and I had to know if they did my boys justice.

i'm generally a person who watches the sub versus the dub.

i'm super biased towards japanese audio, although there would be some exceptions here and there for a good dub.
