Colors Chat 104

Finally, school's out for the day. Time to go to your part-time job, get your homework done, or dungeon crawl through the physical manifestation of someone's unconscious psyche. Oh, but wait, the group chat's blowing up! Better see what everyone wants...

Welcome to Colors Chat, where you can chat with your fellow Colors TCG members! For your response to the topic, you'll receive a card rainbow! As a general rule, responses should be around 5 sentences, but if you're a little short that's fine as long as your response is thoughtful. You don't have to answer all the prompts (or any of the prompts at all) as long as your response is on the topic.

This round's topic is.... VIDEO GAME GENRES!
Your RPGs, your puzzle games, your visual novels, your platformers... there's tons of different kinds of video games out there! What kinds are your favorites or the ones you never play? Is there a genre you don't play you'd like to get into? Do you have a series that normally sticks to one type of game you'd like to see get into a new genre?

After you've responded, reply to other players' answers and start up a discussion! You can earn 2 extra random cards by replying to other people, up to 6 bonus cards total. Feel free to have more discussions than that, but you'll only get rewards for your first three conversations. See the first comment on this post for how to obtain your bonus rewards.

Please keep all comments civil and polite. This round ends Sunday, April 10th is closed.

Turn-based, turn-based, turn-based. I can't deal with real-time games at all - my brain just doesn't work that fast. I love turn-based RPGs like Fire Emblem (FE9/10 are my faves), deckbuilders like Slay the Spire, visual novels like... way too many to list but especially Fate/stay night. I especially love short RPGs like many indie RPGmaker games because my attention span often isn't enough to finish longer games these days.

Oh, and puzzle games. I could do nonograms for hours if you let me.

Oh I can absolutely relate with brains not being able to keep up. I've tried playing Hollow Knight so many times (I backed it when it was on kickstarter), and I just can Not finish it! My brain can not keep up with how fast the combat is and I end up just mashing buttons and praying that works. Otherwise I love the game and it's atmosphere.

Indie rpgmaker games are a blast to try out. I was introduced to those as a teenager through all the popular horror ones like Mad Father and Witch's House. But yeah games where you can go at your own pace and have the ability to sit back and look at the situation, are such nice respites from games where you constantly have to think in the moment.

If I had better eyehand coordination I'd probably be more into Roguelite, but I'm less sneaky and more beef me up so I can run in like a bowling ball and smash stuff which I've found isn't the best strategy for those games oops.

Ohhh spooky and horror games are my jam. I'd shove that into my answer but then I'd talk for a million years LMAO. I've found that like yelling a lot definitely helps, which makes me wonder if that's why so many streamers/youtubers scream all the time. The last game I did a stream of was Layers of Fear and I was so tilted over something I missed that I was too mad to be scared haha.

I love all sorts of video games! Almost all genres, really. Puzzle, horror, adventure, otome/dating sims, simulations, jrpgs, western rpgs, platformers, mobile games that I get obssessed with for like a month before dropping- all kinds! But unfortunately I have adhd so I have two moods when it comes to games: I hyperfocus on it until I finish it, which can take 30 minutes to a dozens of hours, or my mind instantly wanders and I start a new game not long after starting another one, and then by the time I go back to the game I'm like 'well it's been so long since I played it, I might as well start over again', and the process repeats. That was a huge struggle I had when I was little and originally played sonic adventure for the dreamcast.

Honestly, that's probably why I have such a huge backlog. Over 722 games on steam and dozens of physical games!

Probably the game genre I dislike the most is first person shooters. The concept has to be interesting for me to try it, such as games like the original bioshock and the resident evil games. Genre switches can get me interested in some games, though rarely. The biggest example off the top of my head is the newer God of War's. The original ones just had no appeal to me because of everything it was as a concept. But the last one really changed my tune and I'm looking forward to the new one that'll come out!

LMAO I feel you on the hyperfixation!! If I can't get into it and obsess over it until I beat it in like a week then chances are I won't get back into it. I have a Skyrim thing where I keep wanting to play it, I get super into it and end up picking literally everything from all the dungeons and getting weighed down so my run is more of a crawl. And then by the time I get to the next town I'm so tired and so done with playing I shut it off and leave it and never come back to it until a few months later.

And then when I boot it up 'I'm like WAIT WHAT WAS I DOING okay I didn't get very far so I'll start over from the very beginning' and I do the same thing all over again.

722 steam games tho.... I aspire to your level of hoarding LMAO.

THAT'S EXACTLY HOW IT GOES FOR ME TOO LMAO.

I never started skyrim because I just remembered the exact same thing happening when I would play oblivion. I would also just. Steal everything I could get my hands on, including sneaking into people's houses in the middle of the night to do it. Which often ended with me finding a murder dungeon in these npcs' basements. Then I would stop for some reason or another before eventually coming back and doing it all over again.

no one should aspire to how much I hoard because I don't think I can possibly finish all these games in my lifetime, but! At least I have a lot of options!

oh my god LMAO SAME HAT SAME HAT

i would never make it very far, just to the first??? outpost I think???? and every time I tell my friends that they're like 'oh my god play the game' and I must have restarted it like four or five different times but my greedy raccoon hands always grab all the stuff.

murder dungeon tho... now I am intrigued... Maybe I'll have to try another playthrough sometime soon--

YOU DO HAVE A LOT OF OPTIONS and therein lies the beauty of it tbh

listen sometimes you gotta grab every single thing your grubby little paws can take, and everyone else just has to live with it! and yeah, murder dungeons. It would be so funny that some npcs just. have these? Like I would be minding my own business, stealing from a man sleeping in his bedroom, and I'd go into his basement and would find it just COVERED in blood with a bloody table full of torture tools and it'd just be like. Oh. Oh I gotta get outta here!

Maybe there were quests regarding these but I never got far enough to find out.

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE RIGHT.

My family was a playstation family rather than an xbox family (still is) so I never got to play any of the halo games or much of mulitplayer games to begin with. I'd always heard awful horror stories of online play with strangers that just made me avoid them like the plague. Thankfully I'm more open to multiplayer games now than I used to be, like dead by daylight, deep rock galactic, phasmophobia, armello, and league of legends, but that's because I have people I know that I can actually play with.

I dunno what it is, but I just get exhausted thinking about playing with random strangers.

And yeah! I can't wait to see whatver they got planned for her and the rest of the pantheon seeing as we didn't see a whole lot of the bigger gods in the first one.

i really like western rpgs with a lot of roleplaying options, especially if there are a bunch of crunchy stats and dice rolls and stuff. (divinity 2, planescape torment, morrowind, disco elysium, etc.) i also like grindy minmaxing so i get super into farming games. i'm very uncoordinated so i don't usually go for anything that requires good aim or quick reaction times but i'm a sucker for cool vibes so i'll make exceptions for stuff like bloodborne.

i despise platformers and physical puzzles (the only reason i won't play botw). i'm also forbidden from getting invested in mobile games because i'm pathologically bad with money and love collecting things (besides cookie run kingdom which i find very f2p friendly).

Ooooh Divinity 2 I've been trying to play with friends, but it's been a long while. I also got Baldur's Gate which I thought was like the old Xbox one but it's very different!! I know Disco Elysium is also on my wishlist so I might have to give it a look sometime.

god talking and reading all the comments on this is a bad idea my steam wishlist is only going to get bigger oops

FARMING GAMES ARE ALSO MY FAVE!! but I have to be in like the right mood because they're so calm I get so sleepy.... except when I'm speedrunning to marry my favorite NPC or something but then I usually slow down immediately after that LOL.

Gosh, it really depends on my mood. As long as a game has a good story behind it I'm on board - like the Professor Layton series, even tho I will shamelessly admit I used so many of those hint coins for help with the answers - but I'll usually give most things a shot. But my bias tends to lean heavily towards RPGs and visual novels, even though the latter I have to be in a reading mood for. As far as favorites I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy series even though I should... probably play the rest lmao, but I've only got some hours in 7 thru 15. I have 16 on my radar but no cash dollars right now, but you can bet as soon as I get some funds in I'll try picking it up ASAP.

i like a variety of games, i think? i enjoy the professor layton and ace attorney games, and fire emblem three houses, persona 3, and persona 5 are some of my favorite games. i was actually surprised by how much i enjoyed persona 5 strikers too since i prefer turn-based, but it was really fun! i'm bad at fighting games but that doesn't stop me from at least trying to play them (i played jjba all star battle when it came out and i'm going to but asbr too when it comes out, and i've tried playing heritage for the future but it's so much harder). i really like skyrim and dragon age too, and i like coming up with different backstories for my characters every time i start a new file and playing around with different playstyles.

i really wish i could play soulsborne games because they have neat lore and i want to experience them for myself, but i'm so bad at them. like if it requires me to dodge and roll and block i'm gonna have a hard time (unless it's pokemon arceus levels). basically i'm a thoroughly middling gamer!!

[personal profile] cage_of_roses 2022-04-05 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same for dragon age too! At least on a theoretical level. I like to try and have different backstories and characterizations for my mcs in games like dragon age and mass effect, but I also face the horrible issue of like... I don't like being Mean in games. Like when roleplaying games give you the option of being mean or an ass to someone for no reason, I just can't do it! Even if it would probably be the funnier option. The only time I was able to do that was with that one reporter in Mass Effect one where you're given the option of punching her.

Also same for soulsborne games. I really like the aesthetics, especially for bloodborne, and wanna experience the lore and try them out more, but I'm just not good at games like those. I only ever made it to the second area for bloodborne before giving up.

i have a hard time with picking the mean answers too! especially some of the really bad ones that have in-game consequences...i've done just about every possible option in inquisition because that's one of those games i can play over and over again, but i definitely wasn't happy with some of the choices i had to make on some of those playthroughs
i just want to be nice and helpful and kind, even in a make-believe setting!!

also i feel that, i lost to the tutorial boss when i tried to play dark souls...i keep hearing great things about elden ring, but i just know i'd have a rough time. let me play on easy mode i am begging....

[personal profile] cage_of_roses 2022-04-05 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I just can't be mean for the life of me because then I see the consequences and I just Feel Bad. Bioware games are just Built to do that to ya and make you struggle with decisions.

Yeah, Elden Ring looks SO cool, but I just can't imagine me getting very far in it. I wish people weren't so adamant about those games HAVING to be hard. Like, let other people who aren't as good at those types of games be able to enjoy them! An easier and more accessible game setting isn't gonna ruin it for you.

I love a lot of different game types, but my favorites ofc are Horror, Musuo, or Metroidvania. I do like the casual play games as well, such as Nintendo games, but I really prefer I think it depends on game design more then anything. There have been many game series people have reccomended that I am sure maybe in another life I would have liked, but by style/design/ect alone it usually is a no go for me.

A series for a new genre though.. I wont say "man horror pokemon sounds great!", but I wouldn't mind games drifting away from the Resi Remakes/P.T./FNAF inspirations. I think this applies more to western and indie games then anything (which horribly flood the market these days that I feel the horror genre is the FPS of the modern day.. if that makes sense.). Mmmm I wouldnt mind some more games trying what SotN/Bloodstaind have done. I feel the later really did a good sculpt of Metroidvania; i get character customization, unique enemies, worth while backtracking, ect.
