Advent Calendar Day 02

Hello! For day 2 of the Colors Advent Calendar, let's talk about winter / holiday traditions! Is there anything you traditionally do this time of year with your friends or family or even just yourself? It can be related to any winter holiday or just generally a winter-time tradition. A movie you like to watch, a yearly event, visiting your relatives, etc.

For answering, you can take 2 green character cards and 2 red character cards. Just comment with what you take and log them yourself.

This Advent Calendar post is open until January 1st, 2022.

surprising probably nobody ever, my latest tradition has been playing the yakuza games!

"but andie," you may ask, "what the hell does yakuza have to do with christmas?" i'm glad you asked! much like how die hard can be considered a christmas movie, so too can the yakuza series--almost every game takes place in december! this is a screenshot from kiwami 2! and in 5...

ok this is an odd one i think, but every year in the first week of december as a Holiday Tradition i do on my own, i watch rise of the guardians. i don't even know why i do this. it's just a strange Need i have in december. it has jack frost and santa so it's okay, i say, every year as i bundle up with a cup of hot cocoa. (it rarely gets below 40f/4c where i live, btw)

one perhaps a little odd family tradition that we do is watch a christmas carol. every year. which version changes, but the one we bust out the last few years is the one with jim carrey as scrooge. unrelated but it's two days into december and i havent seen baby grinch now that i mention jim carrey and christmas in one sentence..... unusual!!

every year, i get a tea advent calendar and a jam advent calendar. i really enjoy everything that goes into brewing tea, so i make a pot of tea and some toast with jam to share with the rest of my household. it's a nice thing that forces me to take a break from homework/work-work and just mindfully make some tea about folks i care about.

i also always have to start a new game file in skyrim around finals... i just associate it with this time of year, and it just feels right to finish a test and then unwind with a game i'm SUPER familiar with.

my usual winter tradition is to refresh my skyrim modlist and start a new file, i really like snuggling up and playing when it's cold out. but todd fucked us over this year so i haven't had to motivation to sort out all the changes that'd be needed to update to AE (or whether i'd even want to), my modlist is a very delicate house of cards at this point (700+ mods) and it's going to be a big mess.

(more realistically, for the past few years my work schedule has been CRAZY busy between thanksgiving and new years so i'm usually just praying i don't have to work on christmas day :/)

My wintertime tradition is always watching Love Actually... I'm not usually a romcom person but for some reason that one is consistently my favorite.

In terms of family, I usually visit home for Christmas. Since I was a little kid, my mom has had a tradition that we're allowed to open a present on Christmas Eve, but every year, it is always pajamas. She always tries to play coy that it's not but its because she wants us to look cute for pictures LOL. Since then, though, I've also done this at home! I always buy my fiancee a pair of pjs for christmas eve. c:

Aside from putting up the tree with my mom, every year I watch this movie called Olive the Other Reindeer. It's a vey sweet movie by... Matt Groening (yeah that Matt Groening) about a dog who misunderstands a song and thinks she's a reindeer. It's just a made for TV movie, but one of the reasons I like it so much is the way I relate to it changes a little every year and it's an interesting reflection of how I've grown up. Also it still just makes me laugh. I either watch it with some friends or by myself.

Every December/Christmas season, my mom and I always watch some form of The Nutcracker, whether a play IRL, or just one on TV/the Internet! The weekend before Christmas, we usually bake cookies together, too, as a tradition.

I'd honestly like to do more traditions with other people, but it's hard to find something that can be a regularly annual thing, and also make the time for it when everyone is busy for the holidays!

I actually haven't had any holidy/winter traditions since I was a kid, or at least since around my teens. I actually wound up moving away from home 8 years ago, and haven't really made any of my own traditions that actually stick, or have any real meaning. I've only visited my family a few times in the last 8 years, and only 2 of those times were for Christmas. But with Covid, and a State court case for custody of my daughter who was taken at birth for no real reason, I haven't been able to even think about visiting my family for Christmas.

Not all that long ago, I used to do my annual Star Wars rewatch around this time since the new movies were being released in December. But to watch one a week, you have to start in like early October now just to get them all in before Christmas, so I... kinda stopped doing that. Regardless, Star Wars is now a bunch of Christmas movies in my mind, so I like to rewatch a couple of them during the holidays.

But the only movie I absolutely have to see is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. This is my favorite part. Between the "she passed away 30 years ago" and "THE BLESS!! ING!!" I don't know which is better.

Other than that! It's a time of decoration and financial stress and trying to decide if we really want to spend that much money at the local bakery or not.

When I was a younger seal, one of my big Christmas traditions was going with my uncle to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, so I still listen to their albums when I'm feeling festive. Nowadays, my sister and I (and anyone else who wants to sit in with us) watch a small collection of movies. Her favorite movies as a small crow were A Muppet Christmas Carol, Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas, and A Muppet Family Christmas (two points if you can guess the theme), and I double dip on A Nightmare Before Christmas bc it's definitely also a crimmis movie, fight me. Last year her boyfriend made a strong case for Home Alone, so we added that to the watch list and contemplated how dead the Wet Bandits would actually be before the day was out.

i dont really have any personal ones for myself but my family would always go to spend every christmas eve with my dad's side of the family since i was little and it was always pretty nice getting to see everyone especially since we see each other alot less as we got older and moved further away in the general area. we would always just catch up, have a nice dinner and play white elephant. unfortunately covid killed that last year for obvious reasons and its up in the air whether we'll be able to do it this year or not.

(cw, car accidents) and ever since 2011, normally we get sushi on the anniversary of a car accident i survived, since... well. i survived, and i like sushi.

I guess we make roast beef every year.

The closest to a tradition I can think of was when I was a kid, my family would drive to this one neighborhood that went all out with the lights and we'd look at them from the car.

I don't have a lot of Christmas/Holiday Traditions every year. My mom, brother, and I live together, and I put up stockings (the tree used to get mauled/eaten by a cat so we've since opted against it LOL). But my favorite movie to watch is Home Alone - I will watch the first three movies, even. Christmas Eve we usually go and spend time with my Dad and fam and we open gifts and hang out together for a bit. And the morning of Christmas we make a nice breakfast, open gifts, and watch anime.

Otherwise, there's always a big winter breakfast and dinner and while it's Exhausting it's always fun. Usually, there's at least (1) one zombie apocalypse theory or some other silly thing every year. My tradition around this time of the year is travelling to spend weeks around Christmas with my mom, her husband, their dogs and whoever happens to be there too (her husband's sister, my sister sometimes, my niece sometimes too...) and watching movies there or back in my own apartment i guess?? Also we bake for Christmas, tho we try some new things every year but we bake traditional stuff too -- apparently cheesecake is our tradition these days! I love gingerbread anytime of the year but I eat a lot of them around this time of the year. We also make food together, eat a lot, enjoy time together etc. I've always loved Christmas, it's my favorite holiday of the year and I have really great memories of it from my childhood home and both of my grandparents' houses and from many other places too.

Also I buy myself at least one, but sometimes even more than one, advent calendar every year. This year I bought myself one with chocolate bars and it has been amazing~! Shiranna also bought an ice cream calendar for me and her, we ate them all in one go since what is having space in the freezer... But they were small, 70ml sized mostly delicious cups of ice cream!!♥ We didn't even know about those ice cream calendars being a thing until the day before yesterday lmao, I know which calendars I will be getting next year too if both of these are in stores then!! Oh, I also have a kinder chocolate calendar now, ooooops, it was on sale and I will never ever say no to most chocolate things.

I love sweets and baking in general so it's always a lot of fun for me. The other day we actually made chocolate white chocolate chip cookies.

Besides that, my mom and I get together and watch old Christmas VHS tapes, one of them being Hello Kitty: Santa's Missing Hat that we watch every year for laughs. I like to buy Chanukkah gelt for friends or family, for as many days as I can. also I don't know if this happens nowadays with other families where one parent is Jewish and the other isn't, but we also celebrate Christmas too :'D they're usually a little closer together (Chanukkah was in November this year, wild), so usually we'd celebrate back to back, though we didn't have too many big traditions outside of dinner and presents. I guess for things we used to do a lot... while our DVD player was still working we didn't watch it every year, but I used to watch A Wonderful Life with my parents pretty regularly

When I was little, I used to go over to either my paternal grandma's house or my aunt's house for Christmas Eve and dinner, and open gifts, and then head back that night to my house where I lived with my mom and do Christmas morning stuff with her and my maternal grandma the next morning. It was very busy but it was always very fun! Most of our relatives have either moved long distances away or have passed away in the case of my paternal grandparents, so my aunt doesn't host Christmas Eve parties anymore, but I've gone over to her house on Christmas Eve and had dinner with them a couple of times on my own 'u'

As for what I personally do. I always play Katamari Damacy a lot near the holidays!! I first played it during a Christmas season many years ago and the game reminds me of that time of year so I always end up playing it when December comes around.

As children, my sister and I would open one gift from a relative on Christmas Eve to tide us over until the next day, but most traditions have fallen away over the years now that I'm 30. I do watch Elf with my dad, though, and half of the entertainment comes from how hard he laughs each and every year as if it's his first time seeing it.

My family also has a tradition of watching A Christmas Story every Christmas Eve. It used to help my parents keep their sanity while they wrapped gifts as Santa, but they roped us in when we got older and made it a bonding moment.

No real Christmas traditions anymore because the older I get, the less I feel like dealing with any of it. But as far as some general "oh hey it's winter" stuff:

- it's cold outside? time for homemade hot cocoa and chili!!
- a lot of cheesecake (idk man it's a big comfort food for me and I love stuff like that + ice cream when it's cold)
- Year Without a Santa Claus and the first Die Hard get watched at least once ("Aletha you're one of those people?" yes. yes I am.)
- it used to be a yearly tradition to start a new Minecraft server with some friends for Christmas/New Years and play on it for at least a couple of months, but everyone got busier with jobs/relationships/Life™, so it's kind of a disaster to try and plan nowadays... alas. when i was younger too my family used to decorate a really large christmas tree - now that we've moved to a smaller apartment our tree is smaller, but at least now i can put all my anime plushies and beans and mochis on our tree wwwww.

i've been on my own for two winters now, but when i lived at home we celebrated yule every year. i wasn't super into the spiritual aspect of it, but i LOVED getting to decorate and burn the yule log every year. we tied blessings and wishes to it before we burned it...and now that i live in an apartment, i just burn some paper on my stove LOL my roommate thinks i'm crazy.
