Colors 8th Anniversary - Day 08

(for now, pretend there is a pretty banner here! I don't have time to post when I get home so I'm doing it at work ahahahaaaaa)

Happy Friday! We're already on day 8 of the anniversary event!

This weekend I'll be visiting my childhood home for the last time ever (my parents sold the house ;;) so we're going to do some reminiscing for today's event. Let's talk about how you got into anime!

What was your first anime? (or manga?) Was there a series that got you hooked on the medium? Did you see pretty pictures on the internet and decided that you must watch whatever this is right now? (because that's what happened to me) Any other fun tidbits about your introduction to anime/manga?

For sharing your thoughts, you will be rewarded greateight08, four random cards and a choice card! The choice card must come from a series that is at least ten years old. No need to wait for me for the choice card, just comment with what you're taking!

As with all the Anniversary games, this game ends July 1st, noon GMT!

My first manga was Gintama... of course it was. I picked up a copy of the western Shounen Jump issues and it was the one that was premiering Gintama, and then I fell into chaos. I remember when I found the anime I was so shocked at Gintoki's deep voice LOL.

So, I'm taking zura02!

A friend of mine in school liked to draw in anime style! I don't know what the hell I googled but I ended up reading Tenchi Muyo femslash fic and then I was interested. My first actual anime was Fullmetal Alchemist... I never did end up watching Tenchi Muyo.

My first anime was either Pokémon or Sailor Moon and my first manga was Miracle Girls (or Tokyo Mew Mew if formatting matters since the Miracle Girls manga was printed from left to right for a reason that I don't understand). What really got me into the medium, I believe, was Inuyasha - which was introduced to me by a friend in grade school.

I'll take amberamour01. (This character originally debuted in the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky which came out in 2004 - I don't know why he's listed strictly as a Cold Steel character; the Kiseki franchise in general would make more sense to be listed under Legend of Heroes since it's all one universe.)

I first saw Digimon when I was a kid, maybe eight or so? I really liked it, but obviously at the time I didn't know it was anime. I was also super big into the Pokemon craze, collected cards and played the games that were out at the time, and watched the Pokemon anime. I got Pokemon Red and Pokemon Silver. When I was twelve my friend showed me Inuyasha and that was it, LOL. I started watching everything on Toonami/Adult Swim that I could, and one of the first manga I read was Fruits Basket, and Chobits, which I bought myself.

I was peripherally aware of Digimon and Pokémon as a kid, though my parents didn't want me watching it for some reason?? But my first anime was Sailor Moon, that I watched at some kid's birthday/slumber party and it was instant love. Read the Sailor Moon manga, too, back when Tokyopop was still figuring out how to bring manga over and was treating it like western comics and selling them by single chapters. I still have some of those... somewhere.

i think my first anime was technically digimon or monster rancher (monster farm), but i didn't realize what anime really was at the time. they were just cool cartoons.

then inuyasha came around on YTV. thus began my lifelong journey into becoming anime trash and learning about fanart and fanfic. no regrets.

with that, i'll grab osuwari04

My uncle and I used to work on his gundam figures when he babysat me and we'd watch Slayers or Nadesico. My first anime that I really loved was Yu Yu Hakushou because it reminded me of a nice saturday night at my dad's house when he had us after the divorce and i could curl up warm in my blankets and pretend I was a ghost fighter.

it was so dumb im embarrassed but Warm and Wholesome

because of this i will snag mulberry01 for my Best Boy Kuwabara!

I want to say my first anime was like... Dubbed!Voltron? For sure I remember watching dubbed Sailor Moon before school, during elementary. And I remember watching Vampire Hunter D on Sci-fi Channel's late night block, once. Watching anime before I knew what anime was. \o/

On purpose, I remember watching Toonami and recording Gundam Wing on VHS tapes! There were a LOT of shows that debuted stateside there, but GW holds a special place in my heart. And that got me hooked!

Choice card: 7thheaven01

I honestly... have no idea?? When I think about this I always think back to Tokyo Mew Mew (... or Mew Mew Power as I knew it) and when I was a kid and watched it on 4kids. I was obsessed with that thing, I even got my dad to bid on eBay auctions of figures and accessories that the characters wore so I could pretend I was one of them. It's kind of embarrassing? But it was funny.

I'm not collecting anything that old so I have no idea what choice card to take, so if anyone reading this wants one hmu and I'll grab something for you

I got my start with a lot of Toonami over on Cartoon Network, back when the programming was Yu-Gi-Oh and whatever flavour of the month toy game was out. That meant Crush Gear, Beyblade and an assortment of other random stuff. From there I migrated to Animax, with Friday night Sgt. Keroro and Saturday morning Cardcaptor Sakura, and then the rest was history.

My first? Hmmmmmmmmmm I mean my first was probably something 80s related like Gatchaman or Yatterman TBH. The Tatsunoko stuff was around a lot. But for what really god me into it? Not sure... Just it was always on? So I'll stick with that answer for now :O

Oh boy, I actually got into anime because of the pony fandom. I was 13 and really looked up to the leaders of the local group and of course they were weebs. At first I watched animes I've seen skits from on Youtube, like Azumanga Daioh, Haruhi and Sugar Sugar Rune, but then I got lots of recommendations from friends mentioned earlier and really got into it.

LMAO I was way too young to remember! My first anime would have either been Pokemon or Hamtaro, I think. I watched a LOT of dubbed anime as a kid and checked out a LOT of manga from the library. My cousin was also really into it, which helped since I thought of her as a second older sister. I don't even really remember when it was I found out that so much of the media I enjoyed was from Japan...

The big series I was in when I was younger other than standard stuff was Tokyo Mew Mew. While yeah, I watched the dub, I also read the manga and really enjoyed it. I think I liked Cardcaptor Sakura too? I was so damn young though that I have hardly any memories of either series...

/croaky voice back in my day......

my first start was usually badly dubbed anime running on local/cable tv channels that don't even exist anymore lol. Rurouni Kenshin was my jam, along with Slayers, Akazukin Cha Cha and Cardcaptor. There's the holy duo of Pokemon/Digimon too of course, with monster rancher/yugioh sort of in my peripheral.

Manga-wise I got really into Love Hina and Fruits Basket (kid me was... really into reverse harems haaha) (also shoutout to defunct local company chuangyi which I would religiously buy all these manga off of)

Oh wow I think that was probably Pokemon way back in primary school?

A friend of ours was playing the game and let us play occasionally, too, until my sisters and I got the games ourselves, and when we learnt there was an anime about it, no-one could really stop us from watching =D

Pokemon was popular when I was little (around five or six, I think) and everyone was all about trading... stickers. The TCG soon took over the playground, but by that point I was more interested in the show on Saturday mornings.

When I was 11, DBZ would be running on Cartoon Network and I'd watch it on a weekday evening with my Dad after getting home from school. Then I was pulled into Yu-gi-oh by a friend and then started getting into more anime and manga from there.

I'll take outburst06, please!

But I didn't really get into anime specifically until I my older sister did and she started buying them on DVD (I think the first one she bought was.... Fruits Basket??)

i THINK.... and this is a big think. I think that the first anime I watched that made me aware that anime was a "thing" and this was just a thing that I really liked was the X/1999 movie. I watched it on t.v. and I distinctly remembering being like, "wait... is this just. A thing?" Because ofc I'd already seen stuff like Pokemon and other casually airing on t.v. and labeled as cartoons things but I didn't really understand that it was a Thing until I just so happened to catch X/1999. ... I think.

Toonami may or may not have happened before the X/1999 movie my memory is very bad please understand.

Anyways Shounen Jump is what got me into reading manga. And I still own my copies. ...

I believe I've been into anime since I was really young. I remember watching Sailor Moon back in teh 90s and even watching Speed Racer. Speed Racer was my first official exposure to anime when I was younger and I hold that memory really close to my heart.

Not counting series that were popular outside the anime fandom (Pokemon and DBZ) I got into anime thanks to a Polish night-only TV channel that aired stuff about video games and some anime. I watched tons of stuff that way, including Evangelion, Great Teacher Onizuka, Last Exile, Fushigi Yuugi, Paranoia Agent, the first Hellsing, some episodes of first FMA... My second wave of getting into the fandom was in late middle school / early high school when I finally got an internet connection decent enough to stream. Then I watched Death Note, Code Geass, Elfen Lied, all parts of Banner of the Stars... and Evangelion again :D

first animes were definitely the stuff on tv in the 90s, dragon ball z, sailor moon, etc. and then I found out about Adult Swim/Toonami and all the late night shows that branched out into slightly less kid friendly series haha. my middle school library actually had some manga and I would buy certain volumes from specialty bookstores back when they were still like 15 bucks a volume lmao. but my memory's so shaky I really could not say what was like, the actual first ever anime I watched or manga I read, but it was probably sailor moon on tv because let's be real who doesn't love sailor moon.

My first anime was Digimon! An on-line RPing friend was super into the first two seasons and wanted me to check it out so she had someone to enjoy it with, and I fell head over heels in love with it immediately. And eventually I think she had me watch Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters? And then some day I stumbled upon Naruto and stuff and the Toonami block and then I found out they all had this 'anime' thing in common thanks to the internet and it just. Spiraled out of control from there.

Shounen Jump was involved, too, somehow. Because I totally still have issues with like, early chapters of Shaman King just lying around in my closet. But I don't know how far into my spiral that was, hah.

oh... this is a good question... i don't remember exactly what the first anime or manga i read was but i remember the first series i was REALLY hooked on and loved so much (and still do to this day), which was yumeiro patissiere! i started watching anime (aside from the usuals like digimon/pokemon/bleach?? bc that was always airing lmao/etc.) and reading manga more around towards the middle or end of middle school i'd say so of course watched more shows geared at children and yumepati was one of them.

i just loved everything about it... i remember looking forward to a new episode every week (even woke up early for it lmao) and checking all the websites i could to find it subbed... also did the same for uta no prince-sama when the anime first started airing, which i'd say was also my next biggest fandom i was apart of and series i loved a lot (and again, still do today)!

as for how i even started watching any of these.... i don't remember honestly lmfao BUT I HAVE NO REGRETS
