Advent Day 19

It's cold. It's white. It might be absolutely useless, but snow is one of the images most strongly tied to the holiday season. Sure, it doesn't snow everywhere in December, but you're bound to find snow in just about every Christmas movie or holiday song somewhere. But snow! It can be wonderful, it can be fun, it can be a major pain. So instead of talking about the holidays, we're going to talk about...snow.

Tell me a memory of yours related to snow! It can be about the snow falling, snow getting in the way of your plans, doing something in the snow...and, if you've never seen snow, well, you don't get any cards. I'm kidding. If you've never seen snow, tell me what you'd like to do if it started snowing suddenly! Would you avoid it, or, hey...do you want to build a snowman?

For answering this, you'll get four random cards...four random grey cards or four random blue cards. Your choice, but no half-and-half! Let me know which you'd like in the comments. This game closes when all the other advent days do, at the end of the month.

Because I live in a warmer area near the coast, if it does snow, it never sticks. ;w; But I remember once it snowed when the Opening Ceremonies for the Olympics was on! It didn't stick for long but it was pretty neat, since apparently it also snowed everywhere in the country, if I remember correctly.

....though my funnest thought with snow is just the idea of turning an npc from Final Fantasy 14 into a snowman because the little shit complains about the cold when he doesn't wear a coat in the snowy, icy, freezing cold area known as Coerthas Central Highlands.

at least when i'm not dressed appropriately for the zone, i just make dumb jokes about freezing what little tits my character has off

I'll take four random gray cards!

Living in England, it doesn't snow as often as I'd like. These years, it starts around January and ends by February, in my area at least. And it's only a couple of centimetres. But when I was a kid, we used to get a lot more, and I lived in this really isolated house out in a massive forest area. I just remember seeing on the tree branches, layers of snow that were thicker than the actual branches, and it was awesome.

Now that I'm older, I don't build things in the snow, etc. But sometimes I like to go into our back garden because you can see cats paw prints and bird tracks on the snow, which is really lovely for me!

Four random blue cards, please!

It doesn't particularly snow here too often and when it does in, like, January it doesn't ever really stick. But I remembered that it snowed earlier on this year and it did actually stick. It was cold to the point where I wore a long sleeved shirt under my work shirt and I never do that. And an older customer actually gave me her sweater despite me insisting that I didn't need it. It was a nice thought.

I'd like grey cards, please.

It snows here and some days I dread it, but I can never really hate it because I grew up with a neighbourhood of kids around my own age and there would always be snowball fights and trying to convince the dogs to pull our sleds (they weren't very cooperative).

Grey cards please!

I remember living in the dorms this year and seeing a bunch of people who weren't used to snow reacting. It was adorable. XD

Blue please!

When I was a kid we never really got snow except for on very rare occasions. But lately it's been snowing at least once a year, even if it's just a little. Normally it turns to slush really quickly and England is terrible with snow, the moment any hits the ground everything basically shuts down.

I remember during my first year of Uni though, it snowed a ridiculous amount. Not so much all at once but it went on forever. Just when we thought things were starting to clear up it started snowing again. I think it was something ridiculous like January to the beginning of April or something. And the place I go to uni is basically hills upon hills so you had to be careful walking anywhere.

I'd like grey cards, thank-you!

For me, I don;t have anything 'special' in the memory department. I remember once it was so high that it was half past the door. But that's nothing really like WOW WAS THAT A STICKY SITUATION. type of moment. I like snow though, I like the feeling of it and the sound it makes when you walk on it!
Ill do 4 random greys!

The only time I've seen snow recently is when I was on my way to my cousin's house for his birthday party. It was all slushy, like it's been run through by cars. It was so cold as hell that I forgot to wear my leather gloves, oops. Other than that, the snow is a reminder that I'll be putting up with the winter weather until March. Take it from someone who used to live in a different country where snow doesn't happen lmao...

I'll take gray cards pls

The first snow-related memory that comes to mind is a really stupid one, so of course I'm going to share it. One time when I was a kid, I was going to go outside and play in the snow, and I had gotten all dressed in my snow pants and boots and coat and everything when I realized I had to pee. (This does not end in peeing my pants, don't worry.) Of course, I didn't want to undo all that hard work of getting dressed, so I resolved to hold it. Once we were outside, my babysitter tried to stamp some words in the snow for my viewing pleasure. However, I, distracted by my need to pee, kept wandering all over the yard and messing up the words. Eventually someone figured out what was bothering me and I did not pee my pants. I told you it was stupid.

4 blue cards for that dumb story, please!

It doesn't snow very much where I live now, but I grew up further up north and we'd sometimes get quite a lot of snow there! When a lot of snow piled up in the ditch in front of my house, my brother and I would dig these big tunnels down there as a kind of fort. We used to play with our friends in them and sometimes turn parts into a jail with ski sticks as bars. Also because our house was single-storey and had a very low flat roof, sometimes we'd climb up there and jump into big soft snow piles!

I'm sure I could come up with more snow memories, but let's leave it at those two for today. I'd like grey cards, please!

We moved to Colorado when I was eleven, so snow was REALLY AWESOME for a few years and then I just got sick of it. It's very pretty and I enjoy seeing it out the window when I have nowhere to go and can curl up by the fireplace with some hot cider, but since I live in the mountains, if you want anything more specialized than a grocery store, you're probably gonna have to drive at least twenty minutes down 70 to get there, which...really sucks in the snow, sob.

Blue cards, please!

Man, ok, I was attending high school in the late 90s, and some of you (maybe) will recall the North American Ice Storm of 1998. Now, I attended a school in Canada, and we're infamous for not having snow closures no matter what. This is the only one we had and, well.

The trees and roads were covered in ice; snow was incredibly deep, trees were drowned everywhere. But the radio didn't say the school was closed so, even though I lived out of area, my mother veeeery carefully drove me there. It took three hours, so I arrived at school around 11 am only to find a teacher at the door saying that they weren't open, so go home.

So we drove three hours back... only to arrive home to a phonecall asking why I was tardy.

See, it turned out it was only a half snow day. They resumed classes at noon.

I'll take the blues!

A good ol' Finnish saying goes "The summers in Finland are short and only have a little snow". It's mostly a joke, but actually, we occasionally have snow during summer months. Like the small snowstorms we had in middle of June this year. It was pretty crazy. Rain turning into hail isn't all that unusual (sadly enough) when the temperatures are low, but it was snowing all day long just a week before Midsummer's Day. Really huge snowflakes, too. Good times. :') Nothing says middle of the summer better than a snowstorm... What a way to celebrate.

Well, now we almost didn't get snow in time for Christmas. The first snow that actually sticks to the ground snowed earlier this week. It's probably gonna stay on the ground until the end of April at least. It's alright, I like snow (and I'm going to Japan in March and won't be back until the snow has melted anyway). Our winters used to last like 7 months so I'm fine with these shorter versions.

I think I'll go with blue cards, please!

Hmm, my most memorable memory of snow was the snowstorm at few years back. I woke up to a sight of snow as far as I could see. And you couldn't even tell that our yard...well was a yard at all. It was snow everywhere and we couldn't get out either. Buuut that meant no school for me and no going to work for my parents.

May I have gray cards please?

My strongest memory of snow is one time when my cousin and I were driving through it, trying to get to a cabin... and we had to keep getting out of the car because our snow chains kept coming off. Trying to wrangle on snow chains while it's snowing and you're underdressed for it is. The worst.

The very worst.

Gray cards please!

What I remember most about snow is all of the awful time I've had trying to drive in it. It was pretty bad last year, but this year it's been warmer, so I'm hoping we won't have that problem. We usually only get about one or two bad storms a year, but last year there were at least five. Gross.

I'd like blue please!

It did snow one year that I lived in the mountains. It was very pretty for a while, but then it knocked out our electricity for a couple of days! I don't think it occurred to me to build a snowman because I was huddled under the covers.

I'll go with grey cards, thanks!

I'm in Montreal, so we certainly have snow, what's the pity is that often Christmas snow is a bit anemic, but then we end up with like 4 feet of it over February and into March and then everyone just wants it to go awaaaaay lol.

I enjoyed it more when I was really little--my favourite thing was digging forts out of large piles of snow.

These days I discovered I get a pretty big kick out of shoveling my walk and my back balcony... though that also loses its appeal at the end of March T_T

Freshman year of college it snowed way harder than normal one weekend in Jan/Feb (?? i can't even remember wow) and it was super pretty except for the fact that it made walking/driving anywhere a pain in the butt and nearly every school in the area except ours canceled classes for the first half of the week. :/ We only got Wednesday off because it was like, state-mandated or something. Going outside the first day after the big snow was so surreal though because very few people were out and there were no cars or anything. It felt like wandering through a post-apocalyptic wasteland haha. We called in Snowpocalypse it was pretty fun for all of one day lmao.

I have this v distinct memory in my childhood of finally getting to go out into the snow. Since I was, like, 9, my ma wouldn't let me go out alone and she def did not want to frolic in the snow so my grandpa had to set aside shoveling to make sure I didn't kill myself................she made sure I had on about 3 layers of clothing but it was worth it b/c I got to make my first snow angel that day :9 and better yet, it was snowing as I was playing so even my footsteps got filled back in like I was never there it was fucking magical that's one of my favorite childhood memories ngl

Snow. My mortal enemy every winter. I can't remember a winter that I haven't fallen because of ice or snow. I mostly like looking at it from indoors. I also very much hate it when the snow melts and becomes very icky.

I do remember playing a lot in snow when I was a kid, but then as I got older, I stopped doing that. Now I just scream every time I get snow in my clothes. Hrr.

I live in sunny Florida, so I've only seen snow a few times - once as a very young kid visiting my aunt in New York, once visiting my girlfriend back when she still lived in Utah. I remember seeing it in Utah and having this surreal moment because with the snow layered on all the rooftops it looked like it did in cartoons and movies, and I'd only ever seen that as an abstract thing. I'd love to have a snowball fight someday, it wasn't the right kind of snow that year.

Snow is an awesome thing when you live up north when the sun comes up around 10.00 am and goes down after three pm. If there is no snow, there is no light! The difference is a huge one.... I'd rather take the cold than the absolute dark that comes with the wet winter... And well, snow itself is very, very pretty!
