COLORS CHAT #22

It's time to sit back, relax, and pour yourself an ice cold glass of... milk. All these games are so great and fun but everyone needs a chance to just unwind and talk. So welcome to Colors Chat!

Here, you will get a topic and you can talk about it all you want. Just listen to your heart and write what you feel like. For your six sentences, you'll get 5 cards. And you should always go around and talk to people, see if you can make new friends or old friends with new light on them or you know, just talk with everyone! It is a chat after all.

Today's topic:
Video game recommendations! What games can you not stop telling others to play? Is there a game you think deserves a lot more love than it gets? Tell us all about it!

To encourage discussions between players, there's a bonus - for every conversation that is at least 5 comments long all participants will receive two random cards. This is not limited, so talk to as many people as you wish!

Please keep all comments civil and polite. You might disagree with someone, but please do not start a flame war. THANK YOU and enjoy your weeks!

This round closes on Monday, September 8th, but the next Colors Chat will go up on the 7th if I remember. CLOSED

It depends on the player. For instance, one of my friends prefers console games, while I play more hand-held. I'm rather fond of the Rune Factory series of games, mostly because I like the mix of simulation and RPG elements. Sometimes I wish there was more of both elements though: better simulations and a deeper RPG plot. Which is the weakness of handheld systems, I suppose.

I don't play many video games anymore. *sobs* Although I do wish that the older Fire Emblem games received more love and attention. The franchise exploded in popularity (at least in North America) with the release of Awakening, which is great, but I wish more people would go beyond Awakening and try the other games.

Also, I know many people have played Earthbound/Mother 2 and Mother 3, but I feel like few people have played the first game of the series, Mother 1/Earthbound Zero. It's another great game that needs more love. ;A;

OH BOY these are gonna be pretty classic recs, nothing new.

If you've never played Vagrant Story, do so. It's a ps1 game that was pushing the limits of tech at the time (2000) so it's remarkably pretty for a ps1 game. In some ways it's an unknown Final Fantasy game, because it's set in Ivalice. (FFXII actually refers to it a bunch - Merlose is a character in Vagrant Story, and Lea Monde is the city VS takes place in). Game mechanics are simple dungeon-delving with weapon forging, but the story is incredible. There's nothing cliche about it, it leaves a lot up to interpretation, and it assumes the audience is intelligent. The translation is also really top-notch and likewise doesn't talk down -- "You are a stain on the escutcheon of our order" is an actual line. Plus, it's a lot of fun. I probably replay it once a year.

Baroque (Atlus - wii or ps2 version) is a remake of an older game (I think SNES?) that's absolutely fascinating. It's frustrating, and bizarre, but a completely unique game. You advance the story by dying and trying different things in your various cycles. It's a roguelike dungeon explorer but set in a weird tainted purgatory where everyone is twisted. Keep an eye on your main character's appearance whenever you restart after reaching the bottom of the neuro tower and use the new scenes you get as it goes to understand the story more... again, dying at some points and surviving at others helps advance the story. But there's no guide to it and walkthroughs can only help so much because of this, so it's more a world and setting to live and indulge in and advance the narrative as you explore this strange world rather than something linear.

I COULD KEEP GOING but I've already filled up this comment box. Feel free to ask questions/for other recs if you give me your personal taste and I'm so happy to chat back and forth with people!

It seems like it gets some love, but The World Ends With You is my absolute favorite game. I usually hate hate hate level grinding, but I actually ENJOYED doing it in this one. The enemies, gameplay, and soundtrack are all great, and it's the only game I truly feel like makes perfect use of the DS.

Honestly, other than that, I don't really have a lot of recommendations? I don't play many video games, especially recent ones. BUT I will say, if you never got to play Luigi's Mansion (the Gamecube version), please please try to, if you can. The battle system is fun, and I feel like it's pretty innovative and interesting for a Nintendo game (as much as I love all of them).

Kirby's Epic Yarn is a lot of fun too, and the graphics are fantastic. The main complaint for that game is it's 'easy' (which, ok, it is a little), but I like casual gaming and not getting frustrated so it's perfect for me, lol. Not to mention if you get hit you lose gems and I WILL NOT LOSE ANY OF MY GEMS!!!!! Kirby's Return to Dreamland was fun too, and it's a little more difficult than Epic Yarn. There were actually times my boyfriend and I (and we're way older than 10, LOL) had some trouble with levels.

TLDR; I am a Nintendo Child.

Since we've had an influx of Megaman fans lately, I think some may agree that Megaman X Command Mission is an RPG worthy of playing. It's the first and only RPG for the X series and is considered non-canon, but don't let that shy you away from the game. It's available on both Gamecube and Playstation 2 and is set after X8 (so expect a "how did that happen" in the case of a certain gunslinger if you've played that game) Your main character is, of course, X, but he quickly gains a party of new characters, all with interesting and unique personalities that feel like reploids that actually inhabit the world of the X series. Form a 3 member team of your choice and send those bad mechs packing; including the final massive attack of the Final Strike, where all 3 characters unleash their weapon stocks out on an enemy to try to finish them off!

There's differences between the 2 versions as well in the forms of extras. The Gamecube version allows you to hook up a Game Boy Advance to search for Treasure Tokens to use in a special machine for unlocking character trophies and the Playstation 2 version allows you to access a demo of X8 and using data from Command Mission on the same PS2 cart unlocks a special fight within X8.

Those trophies can be viewed in the Sky Room, a place to check out pre-game art, music, videos and to change X's super cool Laser Scarf in his New Armor. And speaking of armors, Command Mission gives us new Armors for X and Zero in addition to the special Hyper Modes in game that can give you the edge in battles as well.

With an actual story, new playable characters and surprises galore, I can only recommend Megaman X Command Mission for any RPG buff and Megaman fan but I think anyone who likes RPGs in general should take a look at this hidden gem.

Legend of Dragoon! Playstation One game, came out in the 90's

It's an older JRPG that came out about ~around the same time as Final Fantasy 7 (I think..I can't really remember, lol). Full four disc long! It was game that you can put ~100 hours of game play into it and still not be down with disc 2! I still play it when I get an itch for it and I still love it! It's one of those game that you have to run through it more then once. You have to!

Well I might be bad at this, I love video games of all types, but I really love horror games and stuff so that's what i usually recommend.

I always try to reccomend Rule of Rose to people, mainly for the story and music and "ohmygodsybolism" stuff, but I know a lot of my friends were bored and didn't like the game play. (I also like to tell people about the yugioh tagforce games whom never played them, because they are essentially dating sims but with side card games.)

Hmm, I also really liked Red Seed Profile a lot (Its like this american show that was called Twin Peaks, but minus the log lady.) It's pretty good, has a LOT to do and a huge open world, and some of the weirdest scenes ever, but once you get near the end, its really cool!

Im not sure whats like obscure or anything, and I feel like a lot of games I would reccomend to people is games they have heard before. I like to tell people to play the earlier Silent Hill games, as well as the earlier Biohazard games too. But like I said, its not like people havent heard of those before.

for new games: play shovel knight....

There's a lot of horror games that I recommend to people. The Fatal Frame series, Haunting Ground and Rule of Rose are high up on the list. I've also recommended a lot of RPG maker games, as they tend to be short, but well made and fun to play through. I've also given a lot of recommendations for Bravely Default. It's one of the few RPGs that I could not put down. That claim has gotten to be a lot more impressive in recent years.

Aside from that, I think I'm usually the one getting recommendations. I tend to be slow on the uptake of games, so my friends tend to get to them long before me. Though if I had to mention one that needs more love, it really is Rule of Rose. Super obscure game, shaky combat, but flawless storytelling.

Let's start with the one I've been horribly addicted to for the past few days - Shovel Knight. If you love 8-bit style games, Mega Man and Castlevania-style platformers, and awesome music, you must give this a try. Or at least watch a video on Youtube. It's so amazing, though I'm still a nostalgic gamer at heart - old-style games will always have a place in my heart. The soundtrack is composed with the NES' limitations in mind, the graphics are similarly designed. The story is simple, the gameplay is fairly tight and, despite being a bit on the hard side, has many features that make the difficulty worth it! (No lives, for instance. You get unlimited attempts AND checkpoints! There is still a cost to dying... but it's not nearly that bad.) I can't stop listening to the soundtrack, nor can I stop playing it. What made it even better was that the company, Yacht Club games, actually stated multiple times that it was a 'passion project' for them, which in my opinion shows in the game itself. So if you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it.

If you want a different sort of RPG to your list of JRPGs, then I recommend the Atelier series. Notably, Atelier Rorona. It's one part RPG, two parts alchemy, and one part hilarity. A lot goes wrong when Rorolina Frixell (nicknamed 'Rorona') inherits her master's alchemy shop, and thus she has to save it from going under by fulfilling particular requests (normally alchemizing particular items). The alchemy system in the game is HUGE, and you'll have to do a lot of field exploration (and with it, yes, battling) to find the items and reagents that you need to fulfill your tasks. It's an RPG that puts less emphasis on leveling up a lot in battle, and more emphasis on the day-to-day things in the game, which I actually really liked about it. (Sadly, I had to sell it back recently, so I've only gotten about 1/3 of the game done. But I still highly recommend it and I'll be getting it back as soon as I can!)

...dear lord, I rambled on there. Sorry about that! XD;;

For stuff that's relevant to this tcg.... I have to recommend all of the visual novels personally, especially otome games.

I'm a really huge fan of visual novels sometimes, it's not even funny. ;w; I'm sure a BUNCH of folks here have played through DRAMAtical Murder, but they might not have read more than that. The folks who made it also made a few other yaoi vns called Sweet Pool, Togainu no Chi, and Lamento, though I've heard they're a bit more hardcore than DMMD...

There's also the Key quartet of Kanon, AIR, CLANNAD, and Little Busters! ...though admittedly I've only read the latter of them all, but I do heavily recommend reading them if you can! Especially Little Busters, holy cow. The anime was alright, but I felt some of the girls got the short end of the stick in regards to the adaption. Like, Kud's route had such a huge impact with Riki's relationship, and Kuruguya's raised so many questions and points of curiosity in how it ends the first time you do it...! And the end route, Refrain, just hits you so hard with feels with what happens, with the Truth of the World, WITH THE BASEBALL SCENE WITH RIKI, KYOUSUKE, MASATO, AND KENGO.... I could go on forever! I loved the Little Busters visual novel so much.

And on the otome game side of things, MORE PEOPLE NEED TO PLAY TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL GIRL'S SIDE. There's three of them, all translated! You just need emulators for them, and the guys are all really sweet in different ways in each of the games, especially in 3rd Story.

If you're iffy about emulators and pirating, there's a handful of actual licensed and localized otome games as well, such as Hakuoki! There's four games of it released in North America on PSP, 3DS, and PS3, one of which is a Dynasty Warriors hack-n-slash type of game. They all have the same story, but the 3DS and PS3 versions have some extras that you unlock after going through all the routes as far as I've heard!

All in all, please play more visual novels, people. ;w; A lot of them are really really good! Some of them have anime adaptions that don't do too much justice to the source material, some of them have really good anime adaptions, but either way, you can't beat out a good story straight from the source material!!

(i'm sorry i rambled so much but i just love visual novels so much. ;;w;;)

I'm a weak player, but I find dumb pleasure in replaying the games I've managed to finish, ha!
These games are Persona 3 & 4 and Tales of the Abyss ;~; The latter I would recommend to anyone as the story is just mindblowingly good and it can be fun for those who are more plot-driven as equally as those who are more interested in the game mechanics.

Besides those, I'm a huge fan of visual novels, but ahhh I'm a lazy reader ;; so I usually go for short ones like 999 or the Phoenix Wright series. I'm currently reading Steins;Gate and it's really great.
I've played several otomes and BL games as well! Togainu no Chi and DMMD are the strongest I've found in the BL scene and on the otome side I'd say Hakuoki is the strongest imo as it's more plot-driven than romance-driven and the plot is very engaging and thrilling.

Elite beat Agents! Or Osu tatakae ouendan games. Simple and fun and super addictive! I'd love to see decks about them in here too but I've been too lazy to get to making them myself yet and I'm not sure if there's gonna be enough material... Maybe for a special deck though.

Plaaaaay Psychonauts do it play Psychonauts I don't care that it doesn't fit the theme of this tcg just play Psychonauts you can get it on Steam I think for cheap and it goes on sale occasionally. But seriously it's about a kid who runs away from the circus to go to a psychic summer camp and all the levels take place either in the camp or in people's minds/psyches. It's such a fun game.

Other than that, hmmm. I really enjoy the Metal Gear Solid games (though I haven't played any of the more recent ones). The story was so good and even though I'm awful at shooters you can get by pretty easily if you set the difficulty to the lowest setting haha. It's such a serious game that doesn't take itself seriously at all really?? And so DRAMATIC and I love all the characters and aaargh playing MGS4 nearly killed me.

It is the most under appreciated thing and has an amazing story.

I'm usually too shy to give recommendations, since I'm afraid the other person might be disappointed by something I personally love... But if I would give recommendations, I would probably recommend Ace Attorney or Ghost Trick for almost anyone, as long as the person is interested in stories and characters of games. If they only play FPS or party games, I wouldn't bother. (For those people I would probably recommend League of Legends instead. You've never too many friends to play it with!)

Ghost Trick is probably my first recommendation for someone, who is not familiar with text heavy games, since the puzzles might make it easier to approach than Ace Attorney. And instead of a series, it's only 1 fairly short game, with unique setting and good pace with many cliffhangers, which will keep the player interested. If they like the funny and quirky characters, Ace Attorney could be next, since they have a similar style and humor. Ace Attorney games might not have just as addictive story as Ghost Trick, but they are still interesting.
