Colors TCG 4th Anniversary – Day 19

The anniversary is winding down, so let's have some more discussion. This time, the topic is...

Other Worlds/Universes

What are some of your favourite anime/manga/game universes? Bearing in mind the traditional answer amongst everyone I know is "I'd love to live in the Pokémon utopia where all problems can be solved by a ten-year-old", are there any you'd like to live in? Are you excited by the novelty of constantly dying and being resurrected as a lowly human in DragonBall Z? Perhaps you'd rather be offered the opportunity to become a magical girl, or to revolutionize the world!

Are there any worlds you're perhaps not a fan of but can praise for their creativity? What about aspects of other worlds that really make you think—perhaps there really are spirits living all around us, even if they aren't exactly mushi. Maybe you'd even enjoy having demons living in your cell phone!

For participating in today's conversation, you'll receive one choice special card, one random character card, one random crayon, and fourstival19.

Remember, if you want to enjoy life, expand your world. You gotta push your horizons out as far as they'll go.

I can rarely ever think of any fictional world that I want to live in -- I guess whenever the usual "Would you rather live in Hogwarts, Narnia, or Westeros" thing comes up I'm like DO YOU MEAN CURSES AND MURDER, WAR, OR WAR AND MURDER lmao. Not that our own world doesn't have problems, but a lot of fictional worlds are AFFECTING EVERYONE type things. I guess if I had to pick one, though... Well, I wouldn't much fancy being a wandering ghost or zombie, but I've always thought Lea Monde in Vagrant Story was an absolutely beautiful landscape. I've said many times that I'd love to walk in those actual ruins. So I guess if I ended up doing it eternally as one of the walking dead, I'd accept that. If not that, maybe let's hop ahead in technology and go to Midorijima in Dramatical Murder. There may be poverty and gang warfare and weird corporate-politicians trying to brainwash everyone, but goddamn I'd love to have an Allmate of my own, and all of the concepts behind Rhyme and the Allmate system and literal internet mindlinking sounds like a lot of fun. (Could you imagine RP in that kind of scenario?)

I love the concepts behind a lot of fictional worlds, though, even if I wouldn't want to live there. The applied metaphor-reality of Revolutionary Girl Utena, the political-geographical landscape of The Slayers being defined by demon lords in a war a thousand years earlier, the entire concept behind Wolf's Rain with wolves passing as human in a dystopian world.

For my choice special, I'd like to grab call12!

I do like the Pokemon worlds, but mainly because its more wide open and simplistic and small in human size. Most of the bigger areas are CITY'S with a couple hundred people, but then the vast majority of the place is heavy in forest and vegetation, opposed to just empty highways and nasty trash everywhere. Straight up, Id love to live in a place where buildings don't blow up and things kill you (tho the YGO universe would be okay B-) there is a good 80% chance that if you die you'll come back.... eventually.)
if possible, may I have greenvale02

I'd probably like to be a magical girl person of indeterminate gender. I think it would be the best thing in the world to have a normal life, but still be able to transform into an untra-powerful flying badass to smite the forces of evil. Based solely off of aesthetic, I'd probably go for the Madoka universe, just because everything there is so damn pretty. But, of course, there's a lot of dark parts there too.

I'd like world01, please!

Edit: WAS THAT A FUCKING TWEWY REFERENCE

Ah, I've always wanted to be in Digimon Adventure/Adventure 02... I'd love having a Digimon partner and getting to go into that other world and come back. I like it a little more than Pokemon insofar that your Digimon partner can talk with you, everyone gets ONE special buddy, aaand their evolution changes depending on different circumstances. I really love the Digimon world mechanics.

Pokemon would be a nice world as well though.

I'd like dragonrage02 for my choice card please!
beccastareyes: Image of spacecraft from PlanetES. Text: One more word and I WILL turn this spaceship around and damn the delta-v (turn the ship around)

[personal profile] beccastareyes 2014-06-19 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'd probably pick one of those slice of life anime/manga, except that most of those are school-related, and I'd rather not have to go back to high school. But I suppose PlanetES, for the fact I could go to space. And most of the problems are not too far out from what we already have in this world. And the solution to terrorism is not just 'terrorists go to jail and contemplate going into education and advocacy rather than violence' but also 'the developed world reconsiders its economic policies towards the developing world to make them more just and prevent future violence'.

Also did I mention trips to space? Trips to space! Human spaceflight taking us to Mars and Jupiter! Lunar colonization!

dragonrage09 please.

I would looooooove to live in the Fairy Tail universe where magic exists and I could join a guild. Having magic would just be amazing, and the sense of family you'd feel from being in the Fairy Tail guild would also be awesome.

I'd also kind of like to live in Death Note world, providing I was immune to being killed off haha. I think it would be really wtf and overwhelming to turn on the TV and see all these unexpected deaths and L's broadcasts and public panic. Devastating probably, but also amazing. And to have Shinigami I heart Rem forever would be cooooool.

Choice special is Nekomimi01. Thank you!

There have been a couple of worlds I've though "I'd like to exist in this world" but then I remember all of the awful crap that happens just immediately change my mind. Though, barring the terrible life- and world-threatening events that happen, the YGO world in general would be fantastic. Going to school to get general education + learn how to play card games if you're so inclined? Sure thing. Getting a license to drive a D-Wheel so you can have duels on the streets (that conveniently have traffic merge into different lanes while the duel lane splits off into its own thing)? Why not. Or being able to slip on a single eyepiece to watch people dueling around you, with the option to take it off and not see the holograms at all? Sign me up.

Another thing I've always considered (aside from Pokemon shh) is living in the Kingdom Hearts universe. How fun would it be to travel all kinds of different worlds, honestly? It definitely sparks up my wanderlust and man, I think it'd be a lot of fun. You know, as long as I don't have to tote around a Keyblade while being expected to kill off Heartless, Nobodies and anything else that decides it wants to lunge at me.

I'll be taking versicolor12

Surprising absolutely no one, I absolutely feel you on the Lea Monde thing. I know it's a cursed city where the voices of those taken by the Dark resound from the walls and souls fight over possession of fresh corpses, but by god is it one of the most beautiful and atmospheric places I've ever been in a video game and I would take a walking tour of it with you any day.
karayan: Amatsuki: Bonten. For Colors TCG. (# Colors)

I'm predictable and would like to live in the gameverse Pokémon world, yes. But think about it! There's a minimum of suffering (okay the world almost ends on a regular basis but there's always some kid to save it), the possibility of safe travel by foot/bike/rollerblades just about anywhere, amazing career opportunities, and, of course, the Pokémon themselves.

As far as universes whose worldbuilding I love, I'll mention two:
• Ar Ciel (Ar tonelico series): This would be a terrible place to live, and the games themselves are problematic in a lot of ways, but I just love the whole concept of hymmnos and song magic basically being program commands (not to mention the way emotions can change the way songs are expressed). There's a lot of really cool backstory for the world of Ar Ciel, down to mythohistorical legends that actually have regional variations. I really admire all the effort put into creating a believable and deep world.

• Lordran & Drangleic (Dark Souls series): ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PLACE TO LIVE, NEVER GO THERE EVEN ON A VISIT. But again, the worldbuilding is so intensive and so much thought has obviously been put into it that I can't help but be amazed by it. One of the really cool things about the Dark Souls games is that there's not really ever any infodumps. Everything you learn about these decaying, twisted kingdoms you learn for yourself. Maybe it's from an item description, and where you find the item (poor, poor Tarkus... those rafters were too much for him). Maybe it's from the layout of the area (so easy to track Tseldora's downfall in reverse). Sometimes it's from putting little pieces of information together from NPCs who might not be telling the truth. You know these places by the time you're done withe the games, because you put the puzzle pieces of their stories together yourself.

I'll take nonary15, thanks!

Colors TCG 4th Anniversary – Day 19

[personal profile] fall 2014-06-19 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite examples of world building are Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Bravely Default. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a fairly modern setting, but the way that the system is shown and expanded upon is amazing. Everything has been given a lot of thought out and is written in a tight, easily digestible manner without sacrificing complexity. The witch's barriers are simply gorgeous as well. They're fantastical and subtly creepy, contrasting starkly with the mundane world.

The same goes for Bravely Default, albeit it's far more fantastical. I love the world itself, every aspect of which has been well thought out, and because the game doesn't rely on anyone being completely oblivious to the basic mechanics, being introduced to it never feels like a chore. Even the reveals are hinted at before they come up, allowing the player to draw their own conclusions and making the entire experience enjoyable. The different districts are all so separate and wonderfully developed and just simply beautiful to look at.

As for places that I'd like to live... Definitely not the above, haha. I'd have to go with the generic answer of wanting to live in the Pokemon universe. There's plenty more worlds that I admire (Mononoke, for example, is simply amazing,) but most of them are incredibly dark and likely lead to to death, so I'll skip on that and keep my modern conveniences haha...

I'll take underwater05 as my choice card, thank you!

I'd like to live in the Macross universe, actually — specifically the one in Frontier! To see the holographic concerts in real life and live in a traveling space fleet would be awesome. I'm really into hyper-modernized, futuristic settings, you see. The only part that would be problematic would be dealing with giant alien bugs that occasionally show up to attack the cities, but the perks would outweigh the cons. I'd be happy to meet Sheryl Nome in person!

I'll take quality16!

I've recently read They Were 11 manga (and also saw the anime) and I must say, I'm a total sucker for a classic 'optimistic' science fiction scenario. You know, the one where people not only developed interstellar travel and built space colonies, but also created diplomatic relations with other races in the universe. You know, it just looks so soothing when even though right now we can't even achieve peace between countries, we can hope for a future where we cooperate throughout the galaxy... yeah, I know it's naive but it's pleasant. And it's a nice break from the modern, ultra pessimistic sci-fi and cyberpunk.

Gonna take Fantasia04.

I'd like to live in the Precure universe! It's a much more relaxed magical girl canon world (coughs, Madoka), and every girl just seems to be super happy and upbeat. It's not a world where nothing bad happens, but being a Precure would definitely be my magical girl type of choice.

Aside from that, the Gatchaman Crowds universe might be fun. It's not too far off from us timeline wise (2015), but GALAX and the general consensus of the population helping others sounds pretty nice to me!

I'll take isshu12 as my choice.
aaveplsgo: Shichika trying to train with a sword (grace and skill)

I would like to live in the world of Hayao Miyazaki's films - much like our own, but full of spirits living just out of sight, going about their business. The way nature is portrayed is lush and gorgeous and the various supernatural beings are fun and creative. Sure, it can be dangerous like in Spirited Away, but it mostly seems to function on fairytale rules where things work out well if you're courteous and clever.

For the choice special card, I would like icebeam04!

Secondddding Luxendarc (Bravely Default) and Ar Ciel (Ar Tonelico) because those worlds are so pretty and have awesome storylines, but I also wouldn't mind living in one of the Atelier worlds! I really like the world of the Arland trilogy especially (and i wouldn't mind being an alchemist ehe), but the Dusk trilogy's world is also rather pretty as well c:

Uhh I wouldn't want to go through high school again, but I wouldn't mind being in the world of Love Live! and being a school idol lol.

I would love to like in a Pokemon world just so I could have a lot of cute pets, but I'd also miss all the old animals too...

But I think if I had to pick I'd probably just live in AC:NL. Nice neighbours, your workload is minimal compared to actually running a city, you get to catch cute fish and bugs and slimy things with ease. Count me in! Plus living in a town with Isabelle would be wonderful in and of its own.

Pokemon aside....

Man, I'd looooooove to live in the world of Medabots.

I know there's problems and a few chances to get killed by days of darkness and giant evil robots, but having a sentient robot partner/assistant/best friend would be worth all of it.

That, or Megaman NT Warrior/Rockman.EXE for similar reasons. I'm actually kinda torn between the two. One one hand, ROBOTS. On the other hand, little internet buddies cost way less to repair.

I JUST WANT A LITTLE SCI FI PAL ALRIGHT.

allies04!

It's true - everyone wants to live in a Pokemon world, and I'm not going to lie and say I'd mind. Being a Nurse Joy would be nice.

People have already mentioned the Madoka universe as being one they'd want to be in, and I wouldn't mind that one so much, either.

If I really had to pick, though? Not that I want to go through middle and high school again, but Aikatsu!'s universe is just so cute and fun and happy. I want to have my outfits on cards and do magical-girl style crowd appeals.

I'll be taking caduceus07!

Pokemon... and Digimon... HAHA I know, pretty standard. Wouldn't mind being a magical girl either, tbh. Would pass on the dying part though and becoming a witch. I meant Madoka Magica magical girls, obviously. I'm not thinking straight today. As for places that I can appreciate, I can't think of any. I guess Death Note is a neat idea despite me not being a fan of the series.

Taking keystone01!

Okay, this is super duper dorky but I'm one of those people who always loved to imagine really living in the world of places in anime and video games. It's one of my favorite daydream topics. How would I feel living in any particular land... ♥♥

Of course, cliche as it is, Pokemon is my main go-to there, particularly Hoenn. I played it so much as a kid that I remember certain areas of the game better than I do, say, my elementary and middle school. It meant a lot to me, and I have no doubt I'm going to cry bunches when the remake comes out. I've always loved the scenery, and the peacefulness of that region in particular... It seemed like such a serene place, with a good temperature and of course, some frickin' awesome pokemon. WAILORD
Yeah, training Pokemon would also be great... but I'd be fine with having them as pets and still having to deal with normal life things. I don't need to be the one that saves the world, as long as I have a few cute pets and a free pass to a lovely, friendly country.

I also think about how AWESOME having magical girl powers would be a lot. I'd be the worst magical boy, realistically, but by as the tropes go... I'm clumsy and love sleeping and sweets. I could beat anything. I even at some point ended up designing my Precure form... the amount of work I put into him is a little embarrassing, but it makes me happy to think of my alternate identity, CURE SPROUT, WHO CAN DO COOL PRECURE STUFF i dunno, I'm just embarrassing ;;;;;;

On a slightly related note, there are various series I've seen that talk about spirits that have made me really happy to think about. Durarara is one example, especially with how they say "the city is alive." That kind of stuff helped me figure out my spiritual beliefs which made me really happy okay and drrr verse would also be pretty cool to live in

for my choice card i'll take hoenn04!!

WELL! I wanna be in ONEPIECE BECAUSE PIRATES! I would think I would have a slightly better time on some random island in the ocean than my current way of life. and you know stealing a ship and sailing the ocean sounds prettty snazzzzyyyyyy.

Ill be taking mechonis16

But you can't go wrong with Pokemon ever, though! To be honest though, I watch a lot of slice of life so there aren't any major changes with those worlds and mind, and as much as I like Madoka, that's not a world I'd like to be in due to the whole witch concept and Rebellion spoilers.

Animal Crossing is one of those games I'd love to live in -- it's cute and you get rich really fast there, so count me in! But you'd get bored pretty quickly if you don't have friends, after all, honestly. I've had this conversation with my friends, but if I'm allowed to go into one of the Tsubasa worlds - probably Edonis world because the Dream Capsule game was the best I'M NOT GONNA LIE

I'll be taking escaped05 as my choice special!

There are so many fictional worlds I think are super neat but would never want to live in, because I like my peaceful secure existence and flush toilets. But god, as fictional worlds go, I feel like Romancing SaGa deserves a mention for having really fantastic worldbuilding; the entire game is built around sidequests so it's more like playing a game about the world than a game about your characters, and the atmosphere is really well done.

And actually, I think in many ways a well done atmosphere goes a long way for me, beyond even good worldbuilding. Like, the Vortex World in SMT: Nocturne doesn't have as much lore or history as a lot of settings do, but it's a longtime favorite of mine simply because it does such a fantastic job with the atmosphere.

And for my special, I'll grab begnion08!

Look, I could lie to you guys and say I want to go to a place with lots of swashbuckling adventure!! and stuff. But I won't. Honestly, I would love to go into the .hack// universe. It's exactly like ours so I don't have to worry about giving up my creature comforts, except there's an awesome super realistic video game I can play while walking around. And as long as I avoid Tri-Edge and stuff, I don't need to worry about going into a coma. NOTHING CAN GO WRONG, REALLY.

Also I agree with everyone who said Animal Crossing, lmao. Who doesn't wanna get rich quick?

Um, I don't really know. I think it would be cool to live in the KHR world because of the fact that there's a good Mafia. (Okay, maybe not, but still.) I also want that bazooka Lambo has (to send someone 10 years into the future...) and Reborn's Dying Will Bullets. Um, other than that, there's nowhere I'd really want to go...

Maybe Pokemon, but only if I was willing to actually wander around lost. Not that I don't do that already.

Grabbing voice08.
