Well! EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW I LOVE ONE PIECE!
I've been with one piece since 4kids dubbed it! Though the dub was horrible, it got me into a lifetime cycle of laughing and crying in the same chapter. I love everything about One Piece. The plot, the characters, the writer! The good side of the fandom is great. andand just everything is precious! okok.

ps. I'll pass out prizes probably next week!

Slayers. Slayers, Slayers, Slayers.

It's just has a perfect mix of interesting, proactive characters, and a wonderful mix of plot and episodic humor episodes. (I once saw a friend describe it as 'Slayers is the D&D game you wish you played in'.) Slayers filler episodes are usually funny and at least somewhat character driven*, even if they don't further the arc, and the arcs are well paced and have a wonderful action to them.

I'm taking locket07 as my choice card.

* In the sense that Lina Inverse wants things. She wants to trounce bandits, eat delicious food, accumulate wealth and fame and magical knowledge, and for various bad guys to stop bothering her with trying to end the world. The comedy comes from her wanting things getting everyone else in trouble. (Or other characters' desires getting Lina into trouble.)

Did someone order tl;dr? TL;DR for you then.

I will never forget how I first watched Fullmetal Alchemist pictures and thought "I will never watch that series about some weird robot-boy and his mecha best friend." ... I DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT, OBVIOUSLY, I just saw FMA mentioned everywhere because so many loved it and recommended it and I'm not interested in anything about mecha, robots and most things about military either. Another moment, that I'll never forget is Kati saying "I need an Ed muse for my Al muse, but I don't know anyone who RPs Ed - at least not in Finnis-- NEA, READ FMA, YOU'LL LOVE ED!!" Truer words have still never been said, though she did have to convince me that it has nothing to do with mecha-stuff or other stuff, that I avoid all the time. This was sometime around October-November 2009, since I've had an Ed muse since the beginning of November. she even gave me her FMA books so I could read it when I couldn't get my face off of the books, while vising her home. Of course they're in our bookshelf nowadays, but anyway. The manga and Brotherhood really are the loves of my life from all manga and anime ever written. I read them, I watched the first anime while I was reading the manga to the chapters that were out back then -- but I don't really like that anime at all. I watched BH as it was airing, I got so into it that all of my friends wanted me to shut up about FMA for at least 2 minutes? Kati had no idea what she got me herself into, though nowadays she can hug the Al-side of our FMA hugging pillow whenever she wants to! |:

I'm also really into Yuu Watase's works. A friend tried to get me into watching Fushigi Yuugi somewhere back in 2003, but it didn't work - or the videos didn't work on my computer, I don't remember the details. She reminded me about it back, when I got into it years later, when the manga came out in Finnish and I got into that after buying the first book(s). I don't even know how many times I've watched Ayashi No Ceres, but I've watched and read it even more than FY just because it's shorter and I was waiting for new books of FY to be published in Finnish. Still forever mad that AnC hasn't been translated yet, I'd enjoy it in Finnish too.

Rose of Versailles and Ginga Nagareboshi Gin are childhood favorites. My mom didn't want me to watch violent dogs fighting against each others or giant bears, so I couldn't watch Gin's adventures anymore. Well, mom, okay then, local library just got this series about French revolution - do you mind if I watch humans killing humans instead? I don't know, she probably missed the whole fact about its violence and other stuff as she didn't pay any attention to it. When I got back into anime in 2006, I had to go watch Rose of Versailles first. I still loved it, I remembered most of it and I hadn't even seen some of it. Then I wondered what to watch next. Hmm, maybe something about music? Yeah, a series with music sounded nice. I don't remember what got me into watching Full Moon wo Sagashite, but my love for idol series and Arina Tanemura's works started from there.

...I should probably blame Kati for getting me into Magical Girls, but nowadays my main interests are IDOLS AND MAGICAL GIRLS. Monster of the week show? Sure, whatever as long as it has cute magical girls with some cool attacks. Adorable idols singing in a world where entertainment is banned, traveling through space to bring music to their fans? BRING IT, I can watch it because there are all these adorable idols and music and friendship even if I'd probably avoid the series if it was about anything else. No seriously, I'll give a try to anything with magical girls or idols ... it will just take a lot of time as there's a lot of those and wow, I'm still not finished with even a few seasons of Precure.

lieutenant07, please

B-) I think you already know that series. It's gotta be Yugioh, all of the spin offs as well. Its just a series i grow fond of the characters, i enjoy the charm and humor as well, (and the horrible feelings it gives you later on). I can't even explain why I like it as much as I do, but I just do! Its an unhealthy love for it. literally

May I have prima07 for this one?

Death Nooooooooote. It was my first anime series. Before I was even getting into anime, I stumbled across a picture of a subway in Japan somewhere that had a massive Kira and L painted on the wall, and that sparked my curiosity to watch it. Been loving anime ever since, really. And although a lot of people will disagree, I also love the two live-action films for it. The acting is awesome in it and it really nicely brings together the Death Note series.

Making me choose between my favorite shows..... fine then! ;-;

I'll go with something really new then (at least to me) since the other shows'll be talked about (most likely) I sort of ran into Kamigami no Asobi by chance looking at this season's new shows. I originally just thought it'd be a cute game adaption and the artstyle looked nice. And then, I actually got to watch it. It has a decent OP/ED (depending on your tastes, of course) and the characters are all very likable.

I haven't gotten to play the game yet (curse my lack of knowledge of written Japanese) but it seems interesting to say the least. The VAs are all quite fun in their roles (even the characters that don't seem to speak very much or have little screen time) and the show seems fine with making fun of typical storylines (like today's episode, oddly enough!) It's not a typical reverse harem (as I originally expected) as the main character has a personality and frequently shows it. So, needless to say, it's earned a place in my mass deck collection (and the show's not even over yet!)

Gonna grab holybell07, thanks!

Oh god, there are so many of these, but in light of the sailor moon new anime, I'm gonna talk a little about sailor moon. Actually, I'm going to link some rambling I did about Sailor moon and representation and what a big deal it was to me as a 13 year old tiny scared lesbian to be shown superheroes who happened to be gay and not, like, a lifetime story or anything. But yeah. You've got girls whose flaws are normal flaws -- laziness, whininess, don't want to do their homework or get up to go to school -- who are shown to not be dominated by their flaws but become passionate about justice, girls who are shown both to have crushes in passing and still have a capacity for long-term love, girls who take on issues of casual injustice as well as fighting evil... Its approach to women alone felt novel, and then learning about the fact that two of them were dating each other and that wasn't a big deal, it just 'was'... It may be a corny kids' show, but it has a huge place in my heart forever about being a kid's show that cared about representation and showing different types of girls throughout.

I'll have apothecary05 please!

I guess most of my friends know I'm really into Suikoden I-III. I can't pick one favorite game out of the series; it's just those three together because they build such a good story. I really like the world and how the focus is more on human conflict while the human v. fate conflict is second. Like, it's definitely there and not forgotten about, but when it comes down to it, most of the conflict comes from the characters having different beliefs/views. And, being a series about war, characters are of course going to die for real, but when they do, it doesn't feel over the top or like it's there just to make the player sad--it's part of the story.

For the choice card, I'd like blastia07!

I'm into a lot of fandoms, but I'd say my most favorite one is Atelier and Ar Tonelico! ... Which is actually two fandoms (and i guess you could go on to define Ar Tonelico as surge concerto series in general now that we have Ar nosurge and Ciel nosurge) ), so let's go with 'Studio GUST', even if Tecmo-Koei owns it now.

Basically, I'm a big fan of the artwork! (judging from the assortment of Shallie icons I've made and the ones I've uploaded to my personal) Ever since the Arland trilogy especially character designs have been so pretty and the artwork is really nice. I love the characters in all the games I've played, too (Eternal Mana is the earliest), and Pamela is definitely my favorite Atelier girl, followed by... the Arland trilogy protags, but especially Rorona!

Ar Tonelico has really nice character designs, too (like Misha, Saki, Luca, Shukure, etc), and both series have great music! I especially love that Haruka Shimotsuki has contributed to this series' soundtrack since forever, and her being part of Sound Horizon also means we get stuff like this performance of Schwarzweiß. On the Ar Tonelico side, while Shimotsuki is also one of the hymmnos singers, we get the goddess Akiko Shikata and her amazing music- like this live performance of EXEC_over.METHOD_SUBLIMATION/. ~ ee wassa sos yehar

I'm not actually the biggest anime fan insofar that I have difficulty sitting down and watching a lot of anime (and I really don't know why--I thought it was the subtitles but I can watch plenty of live-action stuff with subtitles in one sitting), so there's not a lot of series that I've seen and even less that immediately jump out to me for this one...

But I guess I'm watching Kyousougiga at the moment, and I absolutely love it so far, even if I'm only halfway through. The animation is stunning and that's something that I rarely ever seem to focus on in a lot of anime, but I watched the first episode and it blew me away and continues to impress me. I originally picked it up because a friend mentioned that they really enjoyed the main character, Koto, when I was complaining about a lack of female characters who have the personality traits that I like in a protag (which are kinda your typical hot-blooded shounen protag traits... kids who have an adventure and who are determined to continue their quest and who are kinda rude and loud and brash and make friends with people), and I love her. She's great but so is the supporting cast, and the story is a little confusing but pretty interesting. The OP and ED themes are really great songs as well... I love this show a lot and I haven't finished it yet but I can't imagine anything happening that would make me like it any less.

As for a choice card... I'll take cranes07!

KAGEROU PROJECT. KAGEROU PROJECT. KAGEROU PROJECT.

I've been into it since way back when, when the light novels and manga were first announced, after the uploading of Konoha no Sekai Jijou. I got into it without knowing it was a series at first, and I was able to convert a whole lot of others into being fans of the series and talking about it with me. It's been so much fun for me to watch the tag on Tumblr grow from only having 1 or so posts a day to being overflowed with new posts by fans of the series on a daily basis.

There have been times where I've been less interested in the series and found other series to love to keep more of my attention, but, I'd always end up coming back to Kagerou Project whenever there was new information or new PVs/songs being uploaded. I'd always wreck my sleeping schedule multiple times to be awake the very instant Jin would upload a new PV for the series.

Kagerou Project is so so so so important to me. I love the characters in this series so much and am very passionate for them. I've made a lot of friends thanks to this series, and, since I've been here for so long and actually contributed to the fandom when it was first starting out with my scans and such, I actually feel like I'm a part of something and that feeling is pretty great.

If you're interested in getting into the series, I'd definitely recommend going in an order similar to songs/PVs first, novel and/or manga second, and then anime. The anime is....... well. My thoughts on that is a whole different story, but it'll definitely make more sense if you have prior knowledge of the series before watching. DO NOT MENTION THE NEWEST EPISODE AND THE MMD OPENING TO ME. I WILL CRY. But! If you do get into Kagerou Project and have any questions about the series or anything you're more than welcome to ask me :o

And for my choice card, I'll take drugs07! Shinji, my love...

So I'm going to eschew the obvious answer (LOLH) and instead talk about that one series that I always come back to no matter what and has had more of an impact on my life than just about any other.

Which is to say, Digimon.

I've always just plain loved the concept. A bunch of ordinary kids get pulled into another world and get a partnered creature to save the world alongside by combining human emotion with digital logic? For a kid who was more or less a social outcast, that kind of thing would be a dream come true. The characters are usually relateable, the story is always a fun ride, and I just kind of like how optimistic it is, how no matter how bleak things get the world can always be saved as long as you don't give up.

It's not a perfect series by any stretch of the imagination, and I've never been particularly involved in the fandom (though from what I've heard that may or may not be a good thing for my sanity), but it will always be close to my heart. Some folks are still waiting for their Hogwarts letter, but I will always await my digivice.

...Also the fact that I'm looking for a job as a video game programmer and spent six years in college and grad school in computers may or may not be able to be partially traced back to my love of the digital world as well.

As for my choice card, though, I'll stick with the obvious and go with closest07 please. ^^

There are a lot of things I could talk about, and a ton of fandoms, but ...

Yeah it's me I'm gonna pick Dragonball. It's just - so full of fun and whimsy, and it completely tricks you with the art style and oddball sense of humor. Some of the jokes are subtle, some less so, but it's that cute and shounen spirit that completely gets one invested. I love the action! And then without warning, it pulls off adorable moments and sheer heartbreak all in an instant.

and I will grab champion07 for my card

[personal profile] kuranosuke 2014-06-07 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess the series I've been with the longest and I'm still going strong in it, is the Prince of Tennis. I never would have thought I would get so involved in a sports manga/anime but the series just draws me in.

It's not the plot or the tennis, it's more the characters that keep me interested in the series. The plot can go as crazy as it wants, but I'll still continue loving the characters. I... haven't read much of the New Prince of Tennis because of what is happening there, but well, I will read it through eventually just for the characters. The original story has its flaws and things I didn't really enjoy, but overall it's a really good series and I recommend it to anyone who likes sports manga. Manga is better IMO, but anime has more humour and fillers in it if you're into that. The anime and manga differ a little on how they portray the matches.

This series has given me my favorite character of all the time, which is Shiraishi. There is no character that can take his place. Why do I love him so much? He's a really inspiring and a he's a very good leader with his own quirks and mysteries.

I admit that this was a start for my love for Sports series, so I get interested in many other of the same genre. I started to get to know to KuroBas and Eyeshield 21 because I was inspired.

So yeah Tenipuri, definitely ♥

I'm taking hellguide07 as a choice card.

My current baby precious lovely fandom that I love more than anything in the world is Hamatora. It's about a pair of detectives, they have superpowers called Minimums and they go around solving crimes and stuff.

By any other measure of quality, this show is not good. It has very poor animation, filler episodes that make absolutely no sense (especially when it's only 12 episodes long...), a shoestring plot that barely holds itself together long enough to explode in the final episode with a Dramatic!!! cliffhanger. But there are a couple of things about it that makes me love it.

The first is the characters. While people say they're fairly generic, I disagree completely. Every character is given at least one episode where they're given development and a backstory, or some more mysteries that'll be explored in the second season. I really like all the characters in the series, I feel they all have their unique personality quirks and are fleshed out enough that you can say "What if?" without really reaching for anything.

The second is just... The atmosphere that surrounds fans of it. Everyone I've met has been very sweet, even if we disagree about stuff. There's nobody in the fandom that I feel intimidated by. It really makes me want to contribute, whether by posting my fanfic, or trying to improve my Japanese skills so I can translate stuff for people or communicate with the fanartists that draw some really beautiful fanart. It's really the first time I've felt so comfortable yelling about something with other people. Even if it's not the best, most well-written canon in the world, it and the people I've met through it makes me really happy.

Cardcaptor Sakura is my forever anime. It's one of the few series where I pretty much like every single character; I don't hate/dislike anyone in that show! It has a nice blend of 90's nostalgia while at the same time people can watch it in this time period, and it'll translate well. But really, the characters are lovable, the development is believable for the most part, and the soundtrack is great.

My primary fandoms right now are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Baccano! and Bravely Default.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a tightly written magical girl story that provides an explanation for all of the mechanics it employs, including the main character's special potential, in a way that feels that doesn't depend entirely on destiny, suspension of disbelief and/or the viewer's ability to project and insert themselves into the main character's role. The art direction and animation are beautiful, with a stunning contrast between Inu Curry's gorgeous witch designs and SHAFT's stellar animation. It features a self-contained, wellw ritten story, believable and human characters and a mixture of hope and despair that fits the theme of the series well.

Baccano! is an anime adapted from a series of light novels that employs the strangest storytelling techniques. It features an ensemble cast filled with a mix of interesting, complicated characters (sans a couple that are just poorly written,) and the anime itself skips around in the plot in a way that wouldn't work in any other series. It skips around a lot to focus on the different years and characters, only forming a coherent plot at the end. It also has one of the most stellar dubs out there. It's an anime that everyone should try out. The novels are also worth trying, though they're far more hit or miss.

Bravely Default is a tactical RPG game that is reminiscent of older Final Fantasy games (or so I hear--I was never quite able to get into the series myself.) It employs a small cast of just four party members, but employs a job system that offers an endless amount of potential strategies and combinations. It's a challenging game, but an incredibly rewarding one that relies more on being able to mix jobs and abilities than grinding. The story itself begins as a cliche, with the characters doing little more than adhering to the stereotypes that they were aligned to, but over the course of the game the story evolves and the cast along with it. The cast, featuring four sheltered and relatively naive teenagers, become increasingly complex and human, with their world view expanding rapidly as they travel through the world that they've decided to save.

WOW THIS IS HARD I never stay put in one fandom for a long time so you'll always get different answers depending on when you ask me this question. It's terrible I know, but I think I can narrow this down to three series.

My current fandom right now is Megaman, which I first encountered in the form of Megaman Battle Network 3 Blue! It was a gift for my tenth birthday, along with a Gameboy Advance SP. So basically it was my first GBA game and it was fun. That got me interested in Megaman X when I saw it on shelves in stores, and I got into that, and the my brother got the Zero games and we both got the Starforce games... IT'S REALLY FUN OKAY the battle systems in BN are fabulous and I spent many hours trying to beat the bosses of the games and then kick my brother's ass in a versus fight.

With Megaman X I sucked at platforming but I fell in love with Megaman X Command Mission, which is a turn based RPG. Not to mention, the Megaman X world is interesting! Reploids, their origins, the wars and their fight against Sigma, and Axl of course I love that kid... there's just a lot you can think about for it! Megaman's not usually a major fandom for me but seeing it always brings nostalgia within me. I'll love it forever.

2. My favourite anime/light novel series right now is Log Horizon! It's an MMO-based series along the same lines of .hack and SAO, but where .hack focuses on glitches, comas and game effects on real life and SAO focuses on one boy and how he dealt with getting stuck in an MMO, Log Horizon focuses on politics, world-building and teamwork.

Essentially, players of the MMORPG Elder Tale are stuck in it when it updates, and as it turns out you can respawn after dying so death loses meaning. What happens next is essentially how the players, especially the protagonist, Shiroe, deals with the growing restlessness of players, of threats and problems from NPCs who aren't really NPCs anymore, and of leading a guild. This series is different from .hack and SAO in that Shiroe's not a fighter, he's a tactician. He doesn't deal the blows, he directs the flow of battle from the back, and he's fricken amazing. Also, the newbies are cute as hell and it's fun to watch them learn how to work together. For people who like series that focus on politics, economics, xanatos speed chess and major badassery from the protag, Log Horizon is the perfect series for you!

3. So you might begin to notice my strong bias towards JRPGs because my third favourite is the Tales series, specifically Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, Graces and Xillia, which are the ones I've played. I just REALLY LOVE THE TALES SERIES IT'S SO PRETTY AND THE CHARACTERS ARE CUTE AND IT'S FUN TO PLAY AND I LOVE THEIR STORIES /degenerates into a blubbering mess

tl;dr the way into my heart is jrpgs that is all

The series I've been with for the longest time, and the one I absolutely love over everything is still Fullmetal Alchemist! It was gripping right from the start to the finish, and the plots within plots kept me rereading the manga several times just to see things in a new light and catch all those little details I've missed the first times. What I really love about the series, however, is the characters- particularly 'background' characters that become so pivotal to the story that even while you're rooting for the protagonists, it's everyone that drives the story forward, and everyone collectively that are and remain so important instead of being pushed to the side when the main character comes through, which I see too often in many other series.

I am also in love with Riza and Winry.

Since Katie chose not to talk about it, I'll fill in her for instead. c': Aka Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu/The Legend of the Legendary Heroes/however you want to call it, a light novel series adapted into an anime and manga (among other adaptations)!

LOLHeroes was... a breath of fresh air for me? It's hard to explain what, exactly, but there's something distinctive about it that made it click really well for me when most series don't. Above all, though, I really love the depth and characters! It's a series that goes across all ends of the spectrum—it's full of ~doom and gloom and tragedy~ while it still has a lot of quirky humour and its ultimate message is one of hope rather than despair (as is with all of the author's works in general), and though it's often brutally cynical, it never quite loses a sense of idealism.

And the characters—while you can argue a lot on how justified so-and-so is, etc. (morality is very grey in this series), the bottom line is that everyone has meaning. Aside from very minor characters (who probably exist to die a karmic death), everyone's got interesting backstories, development, and motivations beyond "I'm a douche who kicks puppies for giggles," etc. Kagami isn't also afraid to show when they're wrong or that they're horribly flawed, which is something I appreciate (especially when it comes to the main characters).

I could talk about a lot of favorite series, but the one I keep coming back to is Sailor Moon. It was the first anime series that I actually knew was anime, and it was the one I'd always rush home to catch after school. Now, it's the series where I go 'it's Monday, time for Sailor Moon' (and after July, it'll be 'is there a new Crystal episode this week).

I connected to it initially because of Ami's character - here was this smart girl who started out feeling like she was absolutely alone in the world, then Usagi slammed into her life and that changed everything. As someone who certainly felt that way myself at the time, having someone like that as just a little reminder that things were okay helped so much.

I've realized, though, that now Usagi's my favorite character. This girl has the single biggest heart in the world, and seeing her grow and change and become this girl who saves the universe time and time again is something I really love.

I could talk a lot about other shows and genres I love, but the thing that will always get me to love a show is a central character who cares so much for something that it changes everything.

I'm pretty sure I have mainstay fandoms but I never delve deep into them or think about them because I tend to always go for the newest shiny series of them honestly crying. Thinking about it though, I'll probably say Uta no Prince-sama is one of them even though it's still recent fare. o/

The series revolves around a perfect girl who wants to become a composer, going to a school full of stupid male idols who want to be around her 5ever in which all sorts of antics ensue. We learn about most of their backgrounds and why they ended up in this particular school while we get them singing their songs and such. 1st and 2nd season ended in the same manner and I'm super looking forward to the 3rd season because well stupid pretty boys doing idiotic and erotic dances and singing pretty songs.

I really super love Otoyomegatari! It's such a cute historical slice-of-life sort of story, and the art is incredibly detailed. But let's be real, the mangaka is Mori Kaoru who is pretty well known for the sheer level of detail she puts into every panel so it's like yep. Not surprising but completely cool.

My forever series is probably Suikoden! Every time I fall out of love with it, I replay one game and have the sudden desire to do nothing but talk about it. It's a great game with great characters. I love all of them; I, II, III, IV, V, Rhapsodia, and Tierkreis. It's also kind of a series I grew up with in a strange way...I never had the games as a kid, but I always wanted them and then one day I had them. It was great!

Oh gosh, now you get to see me be embarrassing.

I'm absolutely head over heels for Pokemon. I'm that guy. I've loved it since I was tiny and that love just never stopped. I remember being a little kindergardener, begging Mom and Dad to buy me the stuffed animals. I remember roleplaying it on the playground and anywhere people would listen to me long enough for me to say "Now I have a Pikachu, so let's start." I remember when my parents finally broke down and let me get the actual video game, and playing that for hours and absolutely falling in love with my Pokemon. I've made so many friends from the fandom, and some of the things I've done in-game are even more vivid than my real life memories. Pokemon means sooo much to me and I don't think it will ever stop meaning so much to me.

Thank you, pokemon. ♥
