Anniversary Day 5

  Small Fandoms

Talk to me about those series you love that no one else seems to have heard of! You track the tumblr tag but it only updates once a month at best; you prowl Ao3 but you've read all the fics a dozen times over. Tell me about those rare and unappreciated series you wish more people were a fan of—maybe someone here will give one a try!

If you aren't a fan of any lesser-known series or series with small fandoms, tell me why they don't appeal to you. Do you prefer to have a large selection of fan-produced media to peruse, or do you just enjoy sharing the love with many other fans? Let us know!

Participating in today's conversation will earn you 2 random specials and Celebration05. This post will remain open until June 30th.

I'm up there with Holo and the Rune Factory love. For me, it's a matter of my two favorite games (Legend of Zelda and Harvest Moon) having some really wacky but adorable lovechild. At least, that's the only way I've figured out how to describe it to people who have no idea what I'm going on about when I'm playing and start yelling at my monsters refusing to water the section I thought I told them to in the fields.

Another fandom that I happen to love, but have yet to encounter other fans for: Atelier Annie: Alchemists of Sera Island. It's right up there on the list of games I've gotten from people who have no idea how to shop for a gamer and picked a game off the shelf at random that I've ended up loving for stupid reasons. It starts off with a story about a lazy girl, Annie, who's dropped onto an island being renovated to be a resort as an alchemist-in-training. You meet a whole cast of fun characters, collect materials that seem completely random to make items that are frequently equally as random. It's a quick play, since you're on a timetable the entire game, but the replay value is huge, because you never get the same playthrough twice, and there's multiple endings depending on your performance in the game. It's a load of fun to play, and I'm sure if I look harder I'll find fellow fans around somewhere. 8|

It's possible it's because the localization is kinda bad? All the voiceovers are still in Japanese, and there's sections where the English translations are just... failures at English. And of course there's entire lines in places that weren't ever translated, so you're left scratching your head wondering what the heck just happened there. Then again, Annie's the only Atelier game I've played thus far, but I've been interested in finding some of the others to see if they're equally as hilarious.
