4th Anniversary: Day 7!

My primary fandoms right now are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Baccano! and Bravely Default.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a tightly written magical girl story that provides an explanation for all of the mechanics it employs, including the main character's special potential, in a way that feels that doesn't depend entirely on destiny, suspension of disbelief and/or the viewer's ability to project and insert themselves into the main character's role. The art direction and animation are beautiful, with a stunning contrast between Inu Curry's gorgeous witch designs and SHAFT's stellar animation. It features a self-contained, wellw ritten story, believable and human characters and a mixture of hope and despair that fits the theme of the series well.

Baccano! is an anime adapted from a series of light novels that employs the strangest storytelling techniques. It features an ensemble cast filled with a mix of interesting, complicated characters (sans a couple that are just poorly written,) and the anime itself skips around in the plot in a way that wouldn't work in any other series. It skips around a lot to focus on the different years and characters, only forming a coherent plot at the end. It also has one of the most stellar dubs out there. It's an anime that everyone should try out. The novels are also worth trying, though they're far more hit or miss.

Bravely Default is a tactical RPG game that is reminiscent of older Final Fantasy games (or so I hear--I was never quite able to get into the series myself.) It employs a small cast of just four party members, but employs a job system that offers an endless amount of potential strategies and combinations. It's a challenging game, but an incredibly rewarding one that relies more on being able to mix jobs and abilities than grinding. The story itself begins as a cliche, with the characters doing little more than adhering to the stereotypes that they were aligned to, but over the course of the game the story evolves and the cast along with it. The cast, featuring four sheltered and relatively naive teenagers, become increasingly complex and human, with their world view expanding rapidly as they travel through the world that they've decided to save.

I'll take violinist07 as my choice card.
