Advent Calendar Day 13

DAY 13: Triskaidekaphobia!

That is -- the irrational fear of the number 13! Do you jump the 13th step? Or maybe avoid flying on Friday the 13th? If you don't have any 13 related superstitions feel free to share any others. Broken mirrors, ladders, black cats, not washing your socks on game day, etc!

For answering this you can immediately take one choice card numbered 13 and you'll get one random special! This post will be open until December 31st like the rest of the advent posts!

I actually appreciate this day! Some cool things have happened to me on the 13th and even Friday the 13th. I got with my current girlfriend on Friday the 13th so I consider it a good day u////u

I'm not superstitious at all, really. The number 13 doesn't have any special meaning to me, as in, I don't see it any differently than any other number. I've tried to think of something interesting to share here but I don't have any superstitions ack but I do think it's interesting to read about superstitions others have and stories regarding those superstitions.

For my choice card I'm going to take favoring13, thanks!

I actually look forward to Friday the 13ths... they tend to be pretty good days for me, overall!

I have other some other minor superstitions (mostly like... good luck charms) that I wouldn't say I completely buy into but I don't not buy into them? IDK.

I'm not superstitious at all, buuuuut...I was definitely a little nervous this morning, heh. I don't usually think of it when it's Friday the 13th, but today was also my last day of finals, so I was definitely worried about if I had luck on my side. I think thing turned out okay though?? Yay...

My dad was actually born on a Friday the 13th so it's a day I like. I think people make the bad luck for themselves with negative thinking. My friend REALLY hates Friday the 13th but I think she overreacts to it. :B

I actually have mildly good luck on Friday 13th, so I find that spending time with someone who has awful luck on the days tends to cancel it out, and they end up totally safe as a result. Kinda weird, but hey, it works. Otherwise, the only real superstitions I have are uh. Well, I conditioned myself when I was younger to not step on cracks in the sidewalk, even the ones separating each square, so I end up doing it now without even really realizing it. I also usually wear my birthstone on me, but ah. Around the beginning of November I took the ring off and I've been having an awful time ever since. And I have no real clue where it is either. :T

My mom was born on the 13th. Not sure if she was a Friday or not, but every time her birthday ends up on a Friday, she ends up having some kind of medical emergency in the year leading up to it. Broken bones, falls, this year she caught the flu and nearly died four different ways (though this year she had literally everything going against her what with her birthday being a Friday, it being 2013, and her turning 52, which is 13x4). So while I won't say the day is cursed, you can't really ignore the facts...

Personally, I admit I do knock on wood sometimes. And there are a couple of other embarrassing things. But I don't really follow most of the common superstitions, at least. (Black cats especially aren't unlucky. Ours just has a Napoleon complex.)

On that note, I will take strategies13. ^^

I don't have any superstitions about Friday the 13th but I do believe in good luck and bad luck! And I have one big superstition about the day after your birthday usually being pretty awful. It didn't happen this year, but often times bad things have happened the immediate day after my birthday. One year my dog died, etc. etc. Bad stuff that made me believe it's kind of a thing to expect.

I'll be taking sins13 for my answer! Thank you!

I do avoid walking under ladders! But I didn't even know that avoiding flying on Friday the 13th was a thing people did... Anyway, taking spider13, double horror. o/

I don't think I'm really superstitious but there are a few things I don't do...breaking mirrors and opening umbrellas indoors are definitely 2 that I don't mess with. I don't know why I avoid doing those two specifically, but yeah...you won't catch me doing either one.

I'm not superstitious nor do I feel anything towards the number 13, but I have to admit, I started off today with my laptop dying on me three times, so it's either time to start believing or time to get a new laptop /o\

I'm not super superstitious or anything (hah), but I do have a tendency to lean towards those sort of things. It's sort of hard to explain... Like I know it's not really a thing, but I'll still have an 'ooooh we're staying in room 13, 2spooky' moment from time to time. In spirit of the whole 13 thing though, I'll mention that I visited the Winchester House once! It was really cool but pretty crazy too. She had this motif for 13 going on for some reason, so everything from holes in the sink drains, steps on the stairs and candles in the chandelier were numbered 13. Not to mention the doors to literally nowhere and ways to spy on her kitchen staff....

But yes I think that's enough 13 babble. I'll take deceiving13, thanks!

I'm not really superstitious, though I'll knock on wood and try not to jinx myself without thinking about it. I think the only thing that'll give me the irrational jitters like that is when my mom has a really bad dream (probably because she always calls and warns me to be careful when it happens, haha).

I'm not really superstitious about Friday the 13th. Although it was pretty funny to go into the dentist today on Friday the 13th, that just seems like the perfect opening for a horror story.

I am big on the whole saying or discussing a bad outcome for a situation where you definitely don't want the bad outcome because that just seems like you're cursing it to happen. That's pretty much the only thing I can think of. :|a

I don't have any fear related to number 13, and I'm not terribly superstitious -- but I come from a family that super is so I picked up the habit of not doing things that will inevitably get me a long talk of how this and that brings bad luck. Off the top of my head there's don't pour water to 3 people in one sitting (only two people, and if you need to pour it for 3 then do it for four instead or put down the bottle and start from scratch), don't put keys on a table, don't put a hat on the bed, don't sit in the corner of the table, don't let fork and knife make a cross on the plate when you're finished with dinner, don't wish "happy birthday" to someone before it's their birthday, don't say "good luck" before an important appointment/thing/whatever, etc...

I think superstitions are interesting, but I don't really put much stock in them, aside from good luck charms and such. I really don't like old family photographs, though, because my uncle has a bunch of black-and-white photos of ancestors on my mom's side of the family, and when I was growing up he used to say that he kept them around to remind him that they were watching over the family, which... little me interpreted literally, haha.

13th doesn't affect me in any way, especially not Friday the 13th. I'm a lot more suspicious of the number/date 11. WTC? September 11th. Earthquake in Sendai? March 11th (2011). A bunch of other horrible things like that? Usually happen on the 11th. My grandpa passed away on February 11th, too. Nea fell down on the 11th this month and almost cracked her skull. I just... don't trust the 11th day.

Hmm. Other than that, I don't think I'm very superstitious. I tend to jinx stuff more or less accidentally but that's another story altogether.

I actually think that the 13 superstition is fun - I always look forward to whenever Friday the 13th rolls around, and when I was little I used to take the 13 seat or jersey during school/sports haha. Even outside of the 13 stuff I'm not particularly superstitious; I'm just too unobservant for it.

I HAVE NO FEARS AND NO SUPERSTITIONS, though I have a lot of experience with Russian superstition thanks to my step-mother. I was born on a Friday the 13th so I've also thought of that day as personally special/lucky to me, and I have prompted people to associate the 13th with me, haha.

Gonna take family13 for sharing. o/

I try not to jinx myself and knock on wood and have some good luck items (less charms, more just things that make me feel calmer for things I'm anxious about), but I don't consider myself particularly superstitious aside from those things. I mean, some superstitious things I still wouldn't want to do-- I wouldn't want to break a mirror because of sharp debris, and walking under a ladder just seems like a bad idea from a falling people/things/ladders standpoint. I don't think that really counts, though.

I'm not superstitious but because my family is coming out of the "old traditional ways", I know a lot about what they avoid at all costs.

I know the one where they absolutely won't use any bowls which has a chip in it. They won't use it to eat, they won't use it to serve food, they won't use it to just even hold ingredients.

No shaking your legs because it's believed to be "shaking away your luck".

No showering/bathing on New Year's Day because you will shower away your luck bestowed on you when it turned into the new year. Also, no reading or writing books because books in Chinese can also mean "lose", so ... you don't wanna "lose" for the rest of the year, avoid books at all cost on that day.

No cutting fingernails or toenails when it's dark.

No hanging windchimes because the ringing is believed to attract spirits (I think). No whistling as well as it attracts the unnatural.

Cannot place the bed facing the door because only people who have passed away have their feet toward the (front) door, "ready to leave the house" in a way.

Do not walk underneath undergarments and socks as those items are ... in a way "beneath you".

Do not walk over books, walk around them. (This is one I follow at all cost for some reason.) Pretty much don't walk over anything that has writing or ... education in them. Newspaper, magazine ... whatever.

If you pee out in the open (due to emergency or ... whatever reasons you wanted to pee out in the open), we have to say something like "Please excuse me while I pee here" over and over again for as long as the urination occurs. (I also follow this one out of respect.) We say this in case there IS some spirit at that area and they will take offense if we take a leak at their "grounds".

When moving into a new house, we put rice and tea leaves (I think) in the four corners of the house. I think this is to ward off spirits that may be residing in the house. For me personally, I would hire the local Kaumātua and a monk to come and bless the house on top of the rice and tea leaves thing. Just to be safe ...

In our old house, we had to sweep the floor and mom would always say to sweep IN to the house, not out of the house as it kinda means "sweeping luck out of the house". But since we have a vacuum now, we don't really follow this anymore.

Do not stick chopsticks straight down into your rice/food because it represents the incense sticks we use to pray to. This is one I also follow because it's just plain rude to just stick a utensil straight down into your food.

Following on from above, do not place chopsticks facing other people. Always place it facing an "empty space". I ... tend to follow this too and I just put my chopstick horizontally to me.

When using a knife, do not use it to point. We also don't gift people knives or any sharp objects. Even if it's painting which has a knife or something sharp in the picture, we do not gift it. I think it means like we're "severing ties".

Wow, this was long. Well, I shall take housework13. Thanks =3
