Advent Calendar Day 11

DAY 11: Food!

I come from a family of foodies, so this topic is rather near and dear to me. I want to hear about food! Whether it's the holiday-specific special stuff you always have this time of year, or just something that isn't for the ~holidays~ but that you always like to eat in December (i.e. "it's finally perfect soup weather"), tell me what you look forward to eating all year! (Recipe sharing not required, but if anyone feels inclined to do so, I know I for one will be taking notes!)

For sharing your thoughts, you may take either one choice card numbered 11, OR two choice cards both numbered 01! Just note what you're taking and you can go ahead and snag it, no need to wait for a reply from me.

December is right when cold weather hits, so from here until the end of January I drink nothing but green tea every day all day. There also seems to be a surge of minty things around this time of year, which I absolutely love, and will go out of the way for peppermint sticks and mint chocolate because that's the extent of my ~holiday food~ haha. Also because I'm home for most of December on winter break, I can eat all Mom's warm melty desserts and not have a care in the world, and to be honest, that's what I love the most ;D

I love food god I swear I get the most aggressive when people dare to try to steal food from my plate NO ONE SHOULD DO THAT IT'S PRACTICALLY A DECLARATION OF WAR. I also love to cook, and being italian I am blessid with lots of delicious stuff to use. Very recently I've been doing this one cake typical of the area I live (tuscany) that is pretty much a winter-only thing, the name is castagnaccio, and it's done with chestnut flour and other stuff and it's hella delicious

i am already sad at the idea soon i won't be able to make it anymore what a tragedy...

I love to eat chili during December because the weather over here is usually pretty cold and it helps warm me up a bit. That and it tastes really good. I don't like cold weather much myself, but I look forward to it anyway because that means it's most likely time for my family to make chili again!

So, my family has the best Christmas dinner tradition: Christmas Indian food.

By which I mean we go out and get food from an Indian restaurant. Butter chicken, chicken curry... oh, and the naan, naan is great.

I'll take mysterious01 and border01.

I have a friend who makes the most amazing pies - his crusts are so flaky and delicious! I cannot get over those pies. They are a year-round thing, but the holidays are certainly a great excuse for them! I wish I could post a recipe here, but it's more about the technique than anything else, working very cold butter into the dough with a pastry cutter and making sure it doesn't start to melt. Oh my god, it's worth the effort!

I'm also nuts about soups in almost any weather, but especially during the winter. (Which reminds me, I need to pick up a bigger crockpot. Mine's way too small for chili.) There's one soup, in particular, that I've found is great for when you're cold and possibly have a cold: Julia Child's Aigo Bouido. Mmmm, garlicky! But not overpoweringly so! The process mellows out the garlic to this rich, savory-sweet taste.

My family is very Swedish! As in, most of our food is Swedish even if we're very solidly American by now, haha. The recipes have been passed down from my great great grandma and we still make loads of amazing Swedish meals for Christmas and it's one of my most favorite things because Christmas Pudding and gingersnaps and :9

I'll be taking agent01 and center01!

It's the holiday season and that means STUFFED SHELLS HECK YES \o/!! To me, this is the ultimate holiday food... I have incredibly fond memories of rolling over to my grandmother's house where a big plate of stuffed shells would be waiting for me. Though I unfortunately don't see my extended family much anymore, we're probably going to be making it on our own this year (we = my parents and me) even if it's a pain in the butt. Another food that reminds me of the holidays is my mother's green bean casserole, which she only makes on Thanksgiving and occasionally Christmas. Gosh, I'm hungry now...

I love cheese buns and garlic bread! I look forward to eating it all december and maybe even longer? Aha.
Haha, during december I make lots of cookies, gingerbreads and brownies for my family. I love baking ♥

No one in my family is big on the traditional gingerbread cookies, so instead of those we make honey cakes every Christmas! Sadly I don't have the recipe on me, but I can assure you that they are incredibly delicious.

I always drink a lot more hot tea around this time, since it's so cold! There's a blend from Adagio Teas that I like--it's a Junko Enoshima blend, with candy apple, cinnamon, assam melody, and sprinkles, and it tastes like Christmas. It's delicious, and my favorite tea ever! Squash is also perfect with a little bit of brown sugar and cinnamon. And then, of course, fresh-baked bread... mmm! ♥

During winter it's a family tradition to eat chili. A personal one is that once the holidays roll around I must always have stuffing whenever I can. Candied yams are super delicious, too, and deviled eggs. These are a ew of my favorite things that we normally have around the holidays.

BAKED GOOD ARE ALSO MY REASON FOR LIVING all year round y-yeah. I just really like having the excuse to make and eat baked goods .///.

I will be taking skyjack01 and zelda01

This is the season for one of my favorite things in the world: hot cocoa.

And recently, my parents went out and bought a box of Miss Swiss Hot Chocolate~ It's not really anything special, but it feels nice to drink a warm cup while the weather is cold right now. Occasionally, I'll stir it around with a candycane to give it a nice peppermint taste too!

For holiday food, I'm a weirdo and love the green bean casserole my mom makes around this season. Also the deviled eggs we have at family parties. But aside from those, right now is the perfect time to go to my favorite Taiwanese hot pot place. +_+ So much hot pot.

I love turkey in Christmas time... also pork. I freaking love pork when it's well-seasoned and cooked properly, and I also can't forget to mention this special stuffing that mom makes. Bread, raisins, olives, some spices, and liver, all cooked in white wine.

Yeah it sounds gross, but it actually tastes really great!

I'll be taking backstroke01 and breast01. :B

Waaah that would be this. That's a godly food and it's so full of calories and shit that it's pretty ridiculous that I used to eat it even back when I lived in a country where it's Summer during Christmas but WHATEVER!! Now it's Winter where I live, and thankfully they sell this great delicious thing for Christmas here too, even though I don't know how to call it in English. And now calories aren't so bad because it's Winter. Ha!

Well, my family makes tamales for Christmas! They make a version with meat with green chiles and red chiles, and then a sweet version without meat that has raisins in it. I'm not a big fan, so I end up having pasole(?), which is a soup that has meat and hominy (yum hominy) and cabbage added in once bowled.

What I really like is duck! I don't have it very often, but my family makes it with a cranberry sauce that is good on ~everything~. We usually have it for my immediate family's Thanksgiving instead of turkey.

I'll have egotistical01 and impossible01, thank you!

My favorite Christmas foods are potato & carrot casserole. My family always have pork for the season, but I stopped eating meat a few years ago so I skip that and eat the casseroles instead.

Also chocolate is always a thing for Christmas, because we get so much as presents... yeah.

Ugh, the holiday season is one where I get my fill of "western"/"American" food since I join my sister's boyfriend's family for their holiday dinners (with her of course). Not to say that I don't typically eat American food throughout the year, but just that I don't get to eat it that often. Especially in a dinner setting. It's pretty nice, honestly. Though I also have to say that eating ice cream/popsicles in cold weather is my absolute favorite, haha.

I'll be taking allsunday01 and cola01 :>

I'm a tea person when it gets cold! GIMME ALL THE TEA! Except black tea...it's like no matter what flavor you put in that, it still tastes like gross black tea lol Other than that, I don't really change my eating habits over the holidays. I'm a pretty consistent person actually...

This may be super strange (idk), but I freaking love the Christmas season because candy canes are readily available for my voracious consumption. I have no clue why I love candy canes so much, but I buy, like, a thousand of them during Christmas so I can chew on them like a squirrel through the rest of the beginning of the next year.

I also love being able to drink hot chocolate or anything else warm like that, or have a butt-load of soup/chili. HELL YEAH, COLD WEATHER SEASON HERE IN THE USA.

Let's not even talk about Christmas dinners because I probably love 99.9% of the food we have at the family Christmas party.

Oops, forgot to say I'm taking wisdom01 and speak01!

It is definitely perfect soup weather, to be sure. Only thing I can think of that we normally have around this time of year is cream puffs-dessert type things on New Year's Eve! (Also, this time of year is perfect for stuff like soups and stews…yummy!)

In my house, our Christmas Eve tradition is to make homemade pizza and throw danishes into the oven on Christmas morning. It's kind of lame, but we love it and all the noms included. Other than that... there are cookies and cakes and pies we always make, but nothing consistent.

My aunt's family always does a huge Christmas dinner for my dad's side of the family whenever we go to her house for Christmas eve :|a I'm kind of a picky eater so I don't eat much of whatever they cook (sob) but I have fond memories of their home-made brownies |D Those damn things pop up at literally every occasion we go to at their house, but it's most notable with Christmas, haha.

My stepdad is actually a professional cook, though 'u'a he makes excellent mashed potatoes and also does homemade pizza every once in a while oh my god we have a bread-maker in the kitchen it's literally from scratch and it's perfect
