Last time, our red challenger faced off against King Bomb from Final Fantasy XII! Thanks to your help, he emerged from that fight in one piece and not on fire, despite King Bomb's best attempts. On to the next-- wait, what's going on?


You can't quite place what's wrong, but everything seems... unstable. The arena looks the same, but you can't shake the feeling that there's something bad lurking in the ring, something that occasionally causes parts of the arena to glitch out. There are two clues: an odd-looking staff, and the creepy music some jerk decided to blast over the sound system:

Forewarned is forearmed, so help Challenger Red prepare for his upcoming battle by providing the name of the opponent that corresponds to this battle theme + weapon, as well as the name of the game/anime series that they come from, for a total of 4 random cards. I'll accept a variety of answers for the series name, as this guy appears in many branches of the franchise, but will give an additional 1 random card if you can provide the game where this enemy is first encountered as the final boss.

That's Skeith, from the .hack franchise. His first appearance game-wise was in .hack//Infection, though depending on what part of the world you were in you may have seen him in .hack//SIGN first. In order to defeat him and his seven "siblings" you need the power of data drain granted by the Twilight Bracelet.

Oh god, I looked at the picture and listened to the music and thought I didn't know it, but it was straaaaangely familiar somehow. Like two minutes later my mind just froze and went ".HACK", like some repressed memories came flooding to the surface.

But yes, the next opponent is Skeith from the .hack series! He was the final boss of .hack//INFECTION!

...I'm just going to go relive painful memories of this fight I didn't know I had forgotten now.

That's not the best rendition of his staff I've seen* but that music clinches it. This is...



Skeith, the Terror of Death. He first appears in .hack//SIGN but is the final boss of .hack//INFECTION. (Obviously the series as a whole is just called .hack//.)

In INFECTION, defeating Skeith requires the power to alter data, better known as Data Drain. Kite receives this power through the Twilight Bracelet, and it looks like Kite (or Aura) has decided to lend it to our challenger.

Skeith also appears in Project X Zone, although in that game he doesn't have to be Data Drained to defeat him.

*The round part is an oval at about a 45-degree angle to the main shaft and the small line runs perpendicular to it. This LP video has a cutscene that provides a better view of it.
