The last signs of summer were beginning to fade away. The tree’s leaves turned vibrant shades of orange and yellow before withering away, covering the ground and being raked into piles. There was a chill in the air, a breeze that came and went, carrying the smell of burning leaves and decaying flora with it. It smelled sweet. Pumpkins and apples were beginning to appear in the store, replacing oranges and watermelons much to Mikan’s excitement and dismay. Out were the stocks of iced tea and coffee, replaced by warm drinks of pumpkin spice and hot chocolate, baked pies and Taffy Apples.

It was a wonderful time of year. The Colors’s flat was filled with a pleasant warmth and the sweet smell of baked goods. Midorin was a surprisingly good at baking. It was a hobby of hers, even, to make various kinds of pies, cookies and cakes. She would decorate them in the most creative of ways, use food dyes and frosting to paint them with electric greens and mesmerizing patterns. It was a calming experience, she felt, and a rewarding one. Everyone loved good food. It brought people together. It filled your belly.

Today she sat at the kitchen with a slice of apple pie. She’d used green apples to make it. It wasn’t anything especially special. There was a huge dollop of whipped cream--made by hand, naturally--on top of it. Bits of crushed nuts were scattered about the top. Chocolate and caramel had been carefully drizzled over it. On the top there was a green apple slice, cut carefully to be just the right size. it would give it just a little bit of crunch.

Midorn plucked the granny apple slice off of the top of the pie, an audible crunch resounding through the room as she took a huge bite of it. Rather than swallow it immediately, she pushed it into her cheek, causing it to puff out, before getting a mouthful of apple pie. She chewed and swallowed, spearing the other half of the apple--and taking a huge chunk of pie along with it--before biting into that as well. She savored every moment. Every bit of flavor, every taste and every crunch.

Delicious. It was delicious. She had truly sat across from her.

Mikan sat across from her. If Mikan was one to savor every flavor, Mikan was more likely to be a person who didn’t want care enough taste their food at all. There was a slice of pumpkin pie sitting on her place, curiously decorated with chunks of candied oranges. She took huge mouthfuls of it, swallowing them so fast that it was a miracle that she didn’t choke. No matter how much she was told to slow down, to enjoy her food and to keep herself safe, she never paid their warnings any heed. Still, the rest of the flat’s residents found it to be cute. Easily dismissed as Mikan being Mikan, even when it left Murasaki beside herself with frustration due to it’s inelegance.

Muffled words came out of Mikan’s mouth as she tried to talk through a huge mouthful of food. Midorin couldn’t tell what she was saying, but she certainly sounded excited. So, with a small laugh, she propped her elbow up on the table and dropped her chin onto her palm. She waited patiently as Mikan chewed like a man on a mission and swallowed hard.

“You wanna run that by me again?” She asked simply.

“This is really good!” Mikan clarified. “Like, super duper good! Like, so good I’ve never had anything this good before good!”

“Why, thank you. I’m glad you like it.”

“Like it? I loooooove it! It even has oranges on it! Oh, are these the ones that we had for Halloween?”

Another small nod and a laugh.

“That’s right. I put them on there for you.”

“They’re so good! And they’re orange! They’re like, oranges made of candy, which is much better than regular candy, because they’re oranges! They’re all sliced up and everything. Right Midorin--wait! Midorin! Can I have another slice now!?”

Her eyes grew wide in the middle of her sentence as she tried to spear her pie again, only to find that there was nothing left. The playful smile never left Midorin’s lips as she pretended to think the question over. Sometimes, it really felt like she was dealing with a small child. So much so that she’d given on up being frustrated and had simply opted to enjoy it. She took advantage of it, even, and used it as an excuse to tease the younger girl.

“Well, I don’t know...don’t you think that’s too many oranges even for you? Besides, you haven’t had dinner yet.”

“Whaaat? Come oooon, Midorn! I’ve only had like, three slices! There’s barely even any oranges on them! That’s not nearly enough oranges for me! So I need to have at least one more slice! Plus, I promise I’ll eat dinner. Please? Pretty please? Pretty pretty pretty please with super special candied Halloween oranges and little orange star sprinkles on top?”

Her begging continued for several long moments. Mikan didn’t even give Midorin a chance to offer her a response between it all, as though the sheer volume of “pleases” and various candied goods would be enough to stave off a potential rejection of her request. Still, Midorin waited patiently until she was done, or rather, until Mikan had decided that she had waited long enough for an answer to her request. She gave a petulant look, as though to say well?

“Well...hm.” Midorin slowly took another bite of her pie, chewed over the decision. She brought her index finger to her lips. Again, she pretended to consider the request. If she were going to reject her request, she would have done so by now, but Mikan, excitable as she was, had never quite onto that fact. Instead she sat squirming in her chair, anxiously awaiting the response to her question, trying to find a way to speed up the verdict.

“I guess you can have one more.”

“Yaaaay! You’re the best, Midorin!”

And without another word, Mikan shoved her chair back, started to run to the kitchen. She backtracked to grab her plate and then resumed running, twice as fast now.

"I," Akai-san announced to the table at large, "am rebelling against food. Why should we have to keep ourselves chained to the process of eating and digestion in order to function? I won't stand for it!" He frowned, then very carefully brought his fist down on the table, not hard enough to jostle anyone else's dinner.

For a while, nobody said anything. The only person at the table with his mouth full was Gin-sensei, who had to carefully chew and swallow before he turned to Akai-san. "Didn't you say at the end of the Battle of the Bands that you were rebelling against the concept of rebellion?" he inquired, and he speared another forkful of pasta that had been attempting to crawl off of his plate.

Down at the other end of the table, Mikan-tan dropped some of the pasta in her lap. The pasta whispered incomprehensible words that might have been thanks before fleeing across the floor and under the fridge.

Gin-sensei took another bite, and the others winced, pretending they didn't hear tiny shrieks coming from his mouth.

Akai-san turned a very unflattering shade of green that made him look a bit like a dying Christmas Tree before rushing off.

Finally, Tobi-han, in the grand spirit of adventure, asked the question that had been on all of their minds. "Gin-sensei, what is that?" Gin-sensei raised his eyebrows, his mouth still full but-- by now-- blessedly silent. Tobi-han held up his plate, and the pasta that had been crawling over the side gave a tiny yelp as it lost its grip and fell to the tabletop.

"I already told you," Gin-sensei said, "it's pasta." He paused, looked around the table, and smiled. It wasn't a very reassuring smile. "I may have done some experiments on it."

"It's alive," Midorin said.

Gin-sensei picked up another forkful, examined it, and shrugged. "Most things were, at some point," he said. "Don't worry, you won't kill the nanobots by eating them."

"Nanobots," Tobi-han echoed, picking up a forkful of his own and looking far more interested than he had.

Gin-sensei smiled again. "I wouldn't put the nanobots in any danger. In fact--" he raised his voice as Mikan-tan dropped more pasta in her lap-- "it's going to be harder to gather them up again if you don't eat them. I put a lot of effort into this meal; don't waste it."

Tobi-han shrugged and went to work, his pasta's screams joining the chorus. Murasaki-dono set her utensils down with a clatter and stalked off in the same direction Akai-san had gone. The rest of them looked undecided.

"Gin-sensei," Aoi-sama said, his voice stiff, "when it's your turn to make dinner next time, perhaps you could make something less… vocal."

Gin-sensei smiled blandly and didn't make any promises, but nobody would have expected him to in the first place.

"This is going to put me off food for a month," Midorin complained.

Tobi-han swallowed and beamed at the rest of the table. "Actually," he said, "it's pretty good."

"Mikan-tan, you have to face it - you have a problem."

Tobi eyed the assortment of fruits spread out across the table, a veritable feast taken from trees and bushes. There were starfruit and durians, goji berries and pomegranates, even traditional grapes, apples, and bananas.

Mikan had ignored them all. She was currently munching on her fifth orange, cheerfully nibbling each segment of the sweet, juicy fruit.

"I don't see what's so wrong. It's not like an addiction to chocolate or anything." She swallowed down another slice.

"I've gone all over the world collecting these for you - fresh, even! And you won't even try them."

"It really is very rude of you," Murasaki-dono agreed, taking a single purple grape in her slender fingers and popping it into her mouth. She swallowed elegantly before she continued: "It's not refined to be a picky eater."

Mikan shrugged, not even breaking a sweat. "I've always loved oranges, ever since I was a kid. How many people get to have a food that's their name? And such a sweet, tasty food full of vitamins!"

"I guess it is an old, familiar favorite," Midori agreed, cautiously inspecting a kiwi. "You know what you're getting with oranges. None of this weird stuff."

Tobi wrinkled his nose. "Kiwis are in plenty of places, they're actually getting more and more -"

"Don't care." She grinned and popped a pomegranate seed into her mouth, though the smile faded as she noticed how it had stained her fingers.

"Well," Akai pointed out, diplomatic as ever, "no matter what, we've got all this great food, right? Let's make a picnic out of it. I'll make some sandwiches."

It was a beautiful sunny day, and the friends agreed it was a lunch to remember. And even though Mikan couldn't be coaxed away from her beloved oranges, they did spot her eyeing a tangerine. But just for a moment.

"Get your finger out of there, you big jerk!"

Kou-kun was quickly struck with a wooden spoon, his hat now dotted with a spatter of chocolate. "Don't hit me with a dirty spoon, you nut!"

"You deserve it." Mikan-tan huffed, crossing her arms, spoon still in tow.

The kitchen was a mess which was partially her fault, partially his. Mikan-tan had tried so hard to learn how to bake, but it was going horribly so far. Between her inability to follow direction and Kou-kun purposefully handing her incorrect ingredients, the cake was going to end in disaster.

"This tastes horrible." Kou-kun stated flatly, still sticking fingers into the bowl holding the batter and eating his fill.

"Then stop eating it, you big, fat, yellow pig!" Another spoon slap.

"Hey!" He yelped, but continued to reach up to wipe some batter from his hat, eating that as well. "If that stains, you owe me!"

"I don't care." She sighed, taking the bowl from him. Despite being chocolate, the batter had a murky, brown-yellow colour to it. "How did this kind of thing happen..."

"I don't know." Kou-kun tried to hide a giggle. "Maybe that mustard powder I handed you instead of cocoa powder."

Mikan-tan's eyes narrowed. "You didn't."

"I did." He replied, smugly. "Since yellow cake is way better than some nasty brown cake."

"You idiot!" The spoon was brought down upon him numerous times, making horribly sticky smacking sounds. "You ruined everything!"

That was the last time she trusted Kou-kun to help her bake.

♠ The body of the fic:

It was getting closer and closer to the end of the year, and the Colors Household had spent several weeks decorating accordingly. Mikan and Kou were tasked with decorating the outside of the house (a task Akai-san came to sorely regret giving them, more for the fact that they seemed to favor brighter, non-Christmasy colors than anything else), Midorin and Murasaki were in charge of decorating the interior of the household (another mistake, again, because their sense of fashion clashed in such a heavy way that Akai half-felt he had single-handedly started a civil war), Kurocchi and Shirocchi were doing who knew what, Gin-sensei and Tobi-han were tasked with setting up the tree, and Aoi-sama and himself were taking care of the Christmas cookies.

Or, to be fair, it was Akai-san that was taking care of the cookies, and Aoi-sama was simply watching. He would have complained if not for the fact that he hadn't really expected anything less from him, but even so...

Well, perhaps he was being a bit too hard on him. With that eyepatch, it was possible that Aoi-sama found some things a bit more difficult to do than others. Depth perception was a funny thing.

He was making a simple batch of Christmas cookies at Mikan's insistence, though part of it was himself wanting to do something that they could all do together. He rolled out the dough and, under Aoi-sama's watchful eye, began to place cookie cutters in at various places. He spaced them enough so they wouldn't overlap and pulled the dough out from under them, leaving behind several dough-shaped cookie men in their wake. He had made sure to stop by the store earlier and buy several tubes of icing in their respective colors, along with different decorations that they could use.

It would be an understatement to say that he was a little excited. He was actually humming as he put the cookies in the oven, and Aoi-sama gave him a strange look when Akai continued to hum as he swept up the kitchen and his mess.

"You're in a good mood all of a sudden."

The serious tone made it hard to determine whether or not Aoi-sama had made a joke. Akai-san was normally in a good mood, so he played the safe route and simply gave Aoi-sama another smile before pulling out the tubes and icing they would use to decorate the cookies.

"It's the season for holiday cheer, isn't it? When was the last time we did something together like this, anyway?"

Aoi-sama made a "tch" noise in his throat, and turned his eye to the window where Mikan-tan was running in circles around Kou-kun, stringing him up in Christmas lights. He had his arms held out like a scarecrow and they were both laughing, until she tripped on the grass and ended up yanking him down hard enough to give him whiplash. It got alarmingly quiet after that, but when Akai-san leaned over to check on them they both jumped up and began running across the yard again.

From the living room, he could hear Midorin and Murasaki squabbling even more, and several large thumps like they were moving furniture? Or maybe that was Gin and Tobi. That couldn't be good. He shared a look with Aoi-sama, silently communicating with him, and the man got up with a sigh and went to go check on the rest of their group.

While Aoi-sama was gone, (it got even more quiet, but Akai-san didn't worry much. He could handle himself and the rest of the group pretty well, which was probably why he'd become somewhat of an unofficial mediator for the household) Akai-san finished baking the cookies and took them out. He removed the cookies from the tray and placed them on cooling racks just as Aoi-sama came in, Midorin, Murasaki, Mikan and a still-strung up Kou in tow. Murasaki and Midorin still looked like they were about to go at each other's throats, but the moment they saw the cookies their faces began to light up.

"They smell soooooo good!" Mikan cried, and ran around the edge of the counter with her end of the lights. Poor Kou was forced along, but he looked just as excited and joined Mikan as she began to grab tubes of icing and candy decorations. Well, rather, he attempted to, but considering his arms were still bound up he could only get what Mikan handed to him.

They spent a good while decorating their respective cookies, and it warmed Akai-san's heart to see how well they came together. Even despite their differences in the beginning, Murasaki and Midorin were starting to chat with another amiably, bonding over the icing as they made each of the members of their little family in cookie form. Though maybe not as much as he'd thought, Akai-san realized when they took cookies of each other and viciously bit their heads off. Oh well.

Kou and Mikan were doing fairly well on their end -- Kou was still strung up, so he held a tube in his mouth and had Mikan decorate his when he got too tired, which she was all too happy to do for him. Kurocchi and Shirocchi even came down from wherever they were hiding, snagging two cookies for themselves before running out of the room, and doing it again, and again until Aoi-sama glared at them hard enough to make them squeak and sit nicely in corners.

And Tobi and Gin... well. He wasn't sure exactly what it was they were trying to do, but they had gathered a mass of cookies and were glueing them together into some kind of Gundam Wing... thing. Attack on Cookie? He had no idea, but it looked like a giant experiment gone wrong.

Akai-san put the last touches on his own Aoi-sama cookie, and turned to offer it to the man. He was surprised, though, because somewhere during their cookie decorating session Aoi-sama had managed to squirrel away ten cookies for himself, and had painstakingly decorated them into near-perfect replicas of... well. Everyone. When he looked at Aoi-sama, though, Aoi-sama only looked away, and even though Akai wanted to say something he figured it best not to.

Besides, one of the others beat him to it soon enough.

"H--ey, Aoi-sama, my head isn't that fat!!"

"Mikan-tan, say ah!"

Akai-san smiled a little as he held the piece of orange up to his younger friend's mouth. This was the easy kind of teasing that he was used to-- even if it probably wasn't all that expected. But even a respectable man had to have a bit of a sense of fun too, especially with someone who was almost like a sister to him.

It was too bad that Mikan-tan didn't see it that way. Her lips drew down into a pout as Akai-san held up the orange slice.

"Akai-san!" She knew she was whining, and that the rest of them would probably mock her for this later, but she didn't really care. "Just let me eat the orange, I don't wanna say anything!"

Akai-san faked a disappointed look. She really didn't react well to even the slightest teasing-- he should have remembered that, honestly. "Ah, but you'd look so cute with your mouth open, just waiting for me to feed you! Shouldn't I do that, as your big brother Akai-san?"

Mikan-tan blushed-- the reaction that Akai-san was expecting, honestly. She didn't like it when Akai-san invoked the 'big brother' title, even though it hadn't been so long since she had used it all the time. But she also opened her mouth, although not before giving Akai-san a few choice words:

"If I do this, you'll stop using 'big brother Akai-san' for a week, okay?"

Akai-san just smiled, as he lowered the orange slice to Mikan-tan's mouth-- let her lick all of the juice off his fingers.

"Mmm, of course."

"You know..."

"Hmm?"

"I don't think we should eat Mikan's candy," Tobi says as he rubs one in between his thumb and forefinger. "What if she finds out?"

At that, Gin beams something wide and playful, and it's obvious something's up. Whatever that something is, well, Tobi wasn't exactly sure that he wanted to know or stick around to find out. On one hand, Mikan might wring out necks ('might' a word that floats around a lot, she might, he might, they might, everyone might), and on the other... his smile isn't all that bad, maybe Tobi is imagining things. Yeah.

Not everything Gin-sensei does is bad; he's not a bad person, doesn't mean any harm, so surely they're eating this candy for a reason. Surely.

And so with his leftover hesitance, Tobi sighs and unwraps his candy, sticking it in his mouth and shaking his head. He doesn't really like the aftertaste of dramatically flavored candy, but he guesses it's not so bad. How Mikan eats so much of this at once, he honestly doesn't know; the taste at the back of his tongue after he chews and swallows is horrid and he regrets his decision immediately.

"Ick..." he lets out, sticking his tongue out. Has this candy already gone bad--?

"Ah, see?" Gin suddenly says, looking like he's about to burst at the seams. "We're simply taste-testing to see if it's all gone bad! It's been a month, you know, Mikan shouldn't be eating candy that's gone bad--"

Tobi's all for helping his friends out, but...

He glances at the bag of leftover candy, making a face. They're going to taste-test all of it?

It's going to take forever, but for Mikan-- Tobi's chest puffs as he watches Gin tug Shirocchi and Kurocchi over to help as well, something dangerously close to pride swelling. They can all take a little bit of a bad aftertaste for a friend.

"There you all are! I thought you'd want to know that it's finished!"

Gin-sensei's proclamation to the table was met with a long moment of dead silence - although to be fair, that might have had as much to do with the fact that it was in the middle of dinner as anything. Kou glanced up, saying nothing around his mouthful of steak; Tobi didn't even bother looking up from slicing into his own. The reactions around the table ranged from indifference (Aoi, always Aoi) to mild but well-disguised horror (though nobody could really blame Murasaki for that, after the ruckus and mess Gin's last invention had wrought) - all of it, though, in dead silence.

At least until Mikan finished chewing and swallowing and spoke up, giving voice to the question that was on everyone's mind, but that nobody seemed to want to ask.

"What does it do?"

"If my calculations are correct -"

Gin was cut off by an audible snort from Aoi. "So, by that you're telling us that you haven't tested it, and you're merely guessing as to what it's going to do, because after the last one you surely can't be so foolish as to believe we'll all accept that the intended result is anything close to the actual one."

More silence, broken only by a bit of awkward shuffling and fidgeting with the silverware around the table - but as much as that sounded like subdued agreement, Gin didn't seem put off in the least, and simply smiled wanly at Aoi.

"There is always room for error in the scientific process. I had intended, actually, to ask for all of your help in testing it. You'll help me out, won't you?" The shuffling and fidgeting that followed that question was at least ten times more awkward...and yet not a single person outright refused. Even Aoi knew that no argument was going to get them out of this one.

Gin-sensei had an oddly persuasive nature, even when he hardly bothered to say a word.

♠ Title of submission: Mikan-tan's Helpers
♠ Characters: Kurocchi, Shirocchi, Mikan-tan
♠ Word count: 611
♠ Theme used: Food
♠ The body of the fic:

Kurocchi couldn't be happier today. Mikan-tan was in a baking mood, which meant plenty of delicious bowls to lick clean or spills to pounce upon.

Shirocchi had told her that he would wait until the food was properly served to have his taste. The snowy dreamer was still doing his best to imitate his idol, Akai-san, even though Kurocchi was fairly sure that she had seen Akai-san lick his share of bowls and spoons when offered. But Shirocchi was absolutely convinced that it was uncivilized

No matter. Kurocchi still intended to enjoy herself to the fullest as she flapped around Mikan-tan on her tiny wings. Thick mouth-watering scents of baked pumpkin and cherry wafted around them, sending Kurocchi's tail into an excited sway.

"If you're going to stay up there, you could at least be more helpful," Mikan-tan said teasing, waving a plastic spoon at Kurocchi.

Kurocchi responded with a gentle purr and flapped up to the spice cabinets to seize some nutmeg in her teeth and offer it to Mikan-tan. Mikan-tan giggled and accepted the spice to add it to her cooking.

"That's better. Do you think you can find me some vanilla next?"

Kurocchi nodded eagerly and went back to the cabinet to sniff out the flavor. She remembered the word from treats Gin-sensei gave them from time to time, usually during the winter. But the other baking smells made it harder to separate one smell from the other. She would need Shirocchi's keener nose, if she could convince him to crawl along the countertops as he used to do before the start of his infatuation.

Shirocchi refused, as expected, and instead suggested they use one of the dining table chairs like everyone else did. An attempt to do so quickly reminded them of how much smaller they were than their companions. Mikan-tan just watched their antics with an amused smile. After several failed jumps at the cabinet, Kurocchi decided to take matters into her own paws and seized Shirocchi's nape with her teeth. Shirocchi let out a surprised squeal, as Kurocchi carried him up to the cabinet.

It took a few moments for Shirocchi to calm down enough to sniff out the vanilla bottle, but the tasty task soon won him over. The rest of the hour was spent with Kurocchi ferrying Shirocchi around the kitchen so he could sniff out whatever Mikan-tan needed. Mikan-tan could hardy stop laughing and rewarded every delivery with a hearty scritch for both of her furry assistants.

When all the pies were finished, Mikan-tan shooed the two of them away so she could clean up. Kurocchi flopped on her special pillow, a bit disheartened at the thought of no more dropped treats. Even Shirocchi kept giving longing glances at the kitchen, suggestion that he too had gotten into the excitement. It was just too bad that their two-legged companions always said their desserts were two rich for Kurocchi and Shirocchi.

That evening, when Mikan-tan brought out all the pies she had spent the afternoon preparing, she also brought out a much smaller pie and set it down on a smaller raised platform on the floor. Confused, Kurocchi investigated the pie to find it smelled of both carrots and fish! She had never smelled a pie like it before and was sure she had not smelled anything like this while helping Mikan-tan.

"I thought you two could use a special treat for helping today," Mikan-tan said, with a big smile. "This one's just for you."

As Kurocchi and Shirocchi dug in (Shirocchi having forgotten to mimic the humans' mannerisms in his enthusiasm), Kurocchi decided that Mikan-tan definitely had cooking assistants from now on.
