COLORS CHAT #18

It's time to sit back, relax, and pour yourself an ice cold glass of... milk. All these games are so great and fun but everyone needs a chance to just unwind and talk. So welcome to Colors Chat!

Here, you will get a topic and you can talk about it all you want. Just listen to your heart and write what you feel like. For your six sentences, you'll get 5 cards. And you should always go around and talk to people, see if you can make new friends or old friends with new light on them or you know, just talk with everyone! It is a chat after all.

Today's topic:
Puns. Love it or hate it: give us some of the best or worst puns you've heard. Do you like making puns, or do you think they're the bane of all humour? And if you're feeling pretty punny today, have a pun-off against a fellow player!

To encourage discussions between players, there's a bonus - for every conversation that is at least 5 comments long all participants will receive two random cards. This is not limited, so talk to as many people as you wish! For this particular Colors Chat, players will get 3 extra cards on top of the bonus for engaging in a pun-off with another player! So go forth, and show off your pun skills!

Please keep all comments civil and polite. You might disagree with someone, but please do not start a flame war. THANK YOU and enjoy your weeks!

This round closes on Sunday, July 13th. CLOSED

Puns are always sorta subjective to me to be honest. (Sorta like how some people love jokes and some have a bit less of a sense of humor.) But, if we're going with recent stuff, I'd better pull out my recent favorite show of Kamigami no Asobi.

A character on the show, Hades, sort of likes to pull out puns every once in awhile. A couple of the most recent ones was a comment about a few people playing in the snow and that "Snowfall is snow joke." Of course, right before he gets hit in the face with a snowball. Another one was trying to explain the fairytale of Cinderella and her name... and completely missing the name scheme; thinking that it's a girl that's died and is made of cinders. (He's only partially correct of course about the cinders.)

I often find puns a little fishy. But if people challenge me to puns, I'll make sure I don't tail behind anyone else. You sea what I'm saying? Ocean't be giving up easily at all. Whale, it's a little embarrassing to carry on like this, no trout about it. But if I kept these puns to myself, I'd be shellfish.

Puns are not my favorite, to be honest. Well, me coming up with them because I have no creativity.

However, one of my favorite KnB characters (Izuki...) loves puns and says them. A lot. And they're probably really lame... That makes me want to learn Japanese more so I could understand the puns. (But I'm too lazy to even look for some of his puns.)

I really hope no one challenges me to a pun-off. I probably would ignore it anyways because it would probably end as soon as it started; I think I mentioned I wasn't creative enough to come up with them.

Also not a huge fan of puns. My step-dad uses them ALL the time (you have no idea, we're looking at several a day) and after a while they just wear really thin with me. His favourite ones are usually animal related, like he'll ask a question and when he receives the answer, say, 'Just checking/chicken,' and then make chicken noises O_O And that always reminds me of the animal puns you see online, like this one. As someone studying the English language for her degree, I do have an appreciation for the interesting things you can do with language, but there's only so many puns I can hear before they just become irritating.

Puns are one of those things that are incredibly contextual. Like, right now, I'm following Mark Oshiro's reread of Terry Pratchett. Pratchett is very good at setting up a pun. I'm not so fond of authors like Piers Anthony who overdo it (though I remember Anthony noted he got letters saying 'please don't barrage us with puns' and then offering a half dozen pun suggestions; I suspect he has a more complicated problem with readers like that).

Of course, an added problem in foreign-language media is that puns don't translate well. You either have to come up with new dialog whole-cloth or add a lot of notes to explain the puns. Which depends on your audience: fansubs can usually get away with the latter better because they know their audience are sufficiently interested in Japanese language and translation to care.

I like puns, but there are ones I will just leave if I see them. It honestly is an art form that must be wield carefully or someone is bound to slap you. Some of the very best puns are ones that you still laugh even after you roll your eyes about it.

One of my favorite feline fighter Ms. Fortunes (from skull girls) is so full of puns it's a real CATastrophe. I would be beary remiss not to mention my love for Teddie (persona 4).

Today will be the Dawn of your defeat, I hope you are all prepared for some truly tearable puns.

I'm not going to sentence someone to corporal punishment for a little bit of wordplay. It's not like they're being a wordy punk or anything. No need to sue them for punitive damages. And punting them off a cliff is being ridiculous.

In other words, I love puns. I love puns a lot. I don't use them in everyday talk constantly, but if I can sneak one in, it makes me laugh a lot.

(And don't get me started on fish puns. I cod go all day long, just for the halibut.)

Puns are so beary important. How would I bee able to communicate if not through pawful puns? Such a life would be simply unbearable! I have no idea ho-neybody could pawsibly live such an grizzly existence. I can't see that being a koalaty life to me. No offense, if you're not part of the pun cub. It is a polarizing opinion, overall. I'm just saying it seems ursanine to me.

After all, you know the old saying: seven days with no puns makes one weak.

Puns are kinda a weird topic to discuses, cause there not very common. I do not hear them or notice them very often, so I don't have much of a say. I can enjoy them sometimes when its just a shift of letter and symbol, but most puns I see are pretty bad, and are meant to be 'only smart people will get these', like math puns and such, but even when you understand them, they are not good, well through out, or intelligent at all, and it always appears someone who is very amateur at math terms created it. (I see a lot of Math puns online...). I guess I don't like puns now that I think of it, cause people use it to be witty, but its pretty low brow sometimes. Though obvious and stupid puns can be fun, (I hear Bear puns a lot in the english language.)

To be honest, puns are a hit or miss with me. Especially when it comes to the English language. They're not common, but they're something I can sometimes enjoy. Then again, I have a thing for bad, bad jokes, so don't even get me started...

To be honest, I love even terrible puns, but I have a hard time thinking of any when I'm put on the spot. My grandfather was great with terrible puns and jokes, and he had a great sense of exactly how long to let a joke run before he gave the punchline. Me, I'm not that great, I just amuse myself and bother other people in the process. (But, hey, what are jokes for if not amusing yourself?) But you say "pun-off" and my mind goes completely blank, oops. I suppose I will content myself with reading other people's pun-offs.

I tend to love puns, though I don't often make them myself. The timing has to be right for it. I love when puns get worked into character and setting names, though. Bravely Default was especially fantastic for this--pretty much everything in that game is a pun.

I also tend to make head jokes like crazy when Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Baccano! I just can't help but get ahead of myself, though the friends that I watch those two with always try to cut me off.

SOMETIMES, ONCE IN A WHILE, they make me laugh, if it's something stupid and anime-related. My boyfriend makes puns a lot, and sometimes it's hilarious (usually at 3 A.M.) and at other times I just give him the dirtiest look I can, lmfao. I'm not big on comedy at all, to be honest? Like, I won't go out of my way to watch a comedic anime or show, or movie. I like when anime do parody things or make silly jokes that way, but it's just not something I seek out. I'm a crab, lol.

i really love puns but i'm bad at them myself. the get-go way to make me laugh if you're not sure what else to do is to start cracking punny jokes at me! my girlfriend's done it, friends online have done it. it works! somehow.

again, i'm not very good at them myself... i'd much rather listen to puns and just clap along let's be honest here. the pun-offs so far are perfect, you're all darling--!

For being a person that rps a character who is very punny ...

(Of course, most of them are play-on-words with Japanese words-- They're still funny though.)

I LOVE puns. So much so that my friends groan whenever I say a pun or a joke with a pun, or I laugh at people's puns and others ask, "How is that funny??" I love making and finding puns! They're one of my main sources of humor, besides sarcasm, and sometimes I can't stop making/repeating them!

To quote a lovely lady from Rooster Teeth (Barbara ilu), "[Another] one of my life goals is to go to the Nile and stand in it, and be like, 'I'm in De-Nile,' and then leave." Because I, too, have that life goal.

Puns can range anywhere from actually pretty funny to a source of endless despair. Doesn't stop me from using them... at times. A bit harder to take part in this wordplay battle due to ESL (am somewhat better at them in my native language where making them works a bit differently since we have tons of ways to conjugate words) and because the sheer volume intimidates me somewhat, my style is more to pop in, throw one horribility at people when they don't expect it and dash. Like an assassin, if you will. (at least when I'm actually trying to be so horrible it's funny, if I just want to break people's spirits it's time to find [personal profile] kuranosuke and face off in a pun-off)

I looove puns and lame jokes! I sometimes sneak them in conversations with my friends, but since English is not my first language (or a language I speak constantly in the environment I live in) it's hard for me to think some in English on the spot ;; The best sound of the world is when someone sneaks in a pun into a conversation and you hear the collective groan of people who hate puns haha.

My friend loves puns, and I ended up liking them more because of her. That, and one of her other friend hates puns, so she can toss her horrible puns at me instead. I'm not so good at thinking them up on the fly. Most of mine are horrible and involve things like this. (It's a picture of a cat. Get it? Huh? Huh? No, I know I'm awful.) I also reblog and tag the pun posts I find on Tumblr as long as I kinda like them. Here's a better cat pun. |D

I love puns - especially the really cheesy, groan-worthy ones - but I'm no good at making them up on the spot. Pretty sure my brother inherited all of the punniness in our family. I also had a biology teacher in high school who lived for the opportunity to make puns and terrible jokes, haha. He was awesome but he laughed way harder at his own jokes than any of his students ever did.

Pokepuns are my favourite fandom puns! Some of them are pretty clever, but I'm reading through the link and most of them fall on the groan-worthy side of things (or are inexplicably NSFW sob)

I love puns. I think they're funny, especially the really stupid ones (I crack up every time I see the wooden breast implants one omg) My friend and I will have conversations that involve sea puns, I'd post some, but are you reely shore you want to sea them? BUT I'M USUALLY REALLY BAD AT MAKING THEM UP ON THE HOTSEAT THEY GOTTA COME NATURALLY Y'KNOW?? I'm easily amused, so tell me a bad pun and I'll laugh. It's really bad. But seriously, who else loves the stupid puns on the Laffy Taffy wrappers? The badder the better!!

I'm not very good at puns. They're fun to hear and realize, but I don't have enough in me to start making puns. That's why I try to stay away from rping characters that do puns (Like Hades from Kamigami or Izuki from Kurobasu). That being said, I don't hate puns, I'm just not a person who makes them...

Unless we talk about Pokémon.

Then I can raichu a love song.
